The 48 teams were divided into 12 groups of four. Each squad plays three group matches. After the group stage, 32 teams proceed to the knockouts: the top two from each group plus the eight best third-place teams.
If teams tie on points, FIFA’s procedure checks head-to-head points, goal difference, then goals scored among tied teams. If still unresolved, overall goal difference, goals scored, and fair play points (yellow/red cards) decide rankings. As a last resort, the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking breaks ties.
Teams from the same confederation can't be drawn together except for European teams.
