Advancing to the Knockout Round
The 2026 World Cup has expanded to include 48 teams. This changes the knockout stage structure. Instead of starting at the round of 16, the knockout phase begins with 32 teams.
The top two teams from each group make up 24 of those spots. The remaining eight slots go to the best eight third-place finishers across all groups.
Tiebreaker Rules Explained
If teams are tied on points within a group after all matches, a three-step process determines who ranks higher.
- First, points earned in matches among the tied teams are checked.
- If still tied, goal difference in those head-to-head matches is considered.
- Next, the number of goals scored in head-to-head matches is used.
If these criteria don’t resolve the tie, a second stage looks at all group matches:
- Overall goal difference.
- Total goals scored.
- Fair play score based on yellow and red cards.
Should a tie persist, FIFA rankings at the time will decide.
Ranking Third-Place Teams
To rank the third-place teams for knockout qualification, FIFA applies these steps:
- Points earned in group matches.
- Goal difference in group games.
- Goals scored in group games.
- Fair play conduct score.
If ties remain, FIFA rankings determine the order.
