Tottenham Set to End Cristian Romero Era Amid Barcelona and Inter Interest

Tottenham are preparing to walk away from one of the pillars of their recent rebuild. Cristian Romero, World Cup winner, defensive leader, serial fire-starter. Gone, before the window shuts.

This isn’t a gentle phasing out. According to Fabrizio Romano, the relationship is effectively finished.

“Romero, I stand by my information, it’s over between Romero and Tottenham,” he said on his YouTube channel. “Romero is going to leave Tottenham this summer. He’s leaving, that’s the intention.”

For a player who has anchored Spurs’ back line since arriving in 2021, that is a brutal line in the sand. But Tottenham’s summer business tells its own story.

De Zerbi’s new defence, Romero’s old reality

Roberto De Zerbi has been backed with a level of investment that leaves no doubt about the direction of travel. Around £237m has gone on Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, heavy spending that has reshaped the core of the side.

The back line, in particular, has been flooded with fresh faces and fresh competition. Micky van de Ven remains, while Van Hecke and Marcos Senesi arrive to thicken the centre-back pool, with Kevin Danso also in the mix. Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka add experience and voice.

For a club not playing European football next season, that is an overloaded defensive unit. Someone significant had to be sacrificed. Spurs have decided that someone is Romero.

The Argentine has been a constant presence since his initial loan three years ago, a defender who plays on the edge and often drags the team there with him. But age, injuries and the club’s new financial and tactical calculations have converged at the same point: cash in now.

Barcelona watch, Inter push

Once Tottenham opened the door, Europe’s elite took notice. The champions of LaLiga and Serie A are both in the frame, but they are not approaching from the same position.

“Inter Milan are very keen on the player,” Romano explained. “We have to understand if financially they can make it happen, but Inter are on it for Romero.

“Barcelona are interested, but only if they sell a defender this summer. If they let a centre-back leave, in that case there’s a possibility for Romero to join, but only as a domino.”

So Inter are active, pushing, testing the numbers. Barcelona are waiting on a trigger. No outgoing, no Romero.

A separate report from Italy underlined the dynamic from the player’s side: Tottenham are ready to sell, and Romero is comfortable closing the chapter on his north London career. Crucially, he is open to joining Inter and is not holding out for Barcelona, removing one of the usual obstacles when a Spanish giant hovers in the background.

The price of a defender in his prime

Inside Spurs, there is a clear valuation. Club insider Graeme Bailey has indicated Tottenham are aiming for around £50m. That would represent a sizeable return and help offset a lavish summer.

Reality, though, has a say. Romero is 28, no longer a project but a finished article, and his injury record is patchy enough to give any buying club leverage. There is an acceptance at Tottenham that they may need to settle closer to £40m to make sure a deal actually happens.

For Spurs, that figure is more than just a transfer fee. It is room to manoeuvre in the final weeks of the window, space on the wage bill, and a cleaner hierarchy in a defence that had become clogged with options and questions.

For Romero, it is the cost of a fresh start at the peak of his career, whether in the tactical discipline of Simone Inzaghi’s Inter or under the weight of expectation at Barcelona.

Tottenham have chosen their path. Now the decision shifts to the two champions, and to a centre-back who suddenly finds his future at the heart of Europe’s most intriguing defensive auction.
