Southampton Faces Injury Setbacks Ahead of Germany Pre-Season Trip

Southampton will head to Germany without three of their attacking sparks, as Caspar Jander, Finn Azaz and Sam Edozie have all been ruled out of the eight-day pre-season trip through injury.

Tonda Eckert has named a 29-man group for the camp in North Rhine-Westphalia, where Saints will face Eintracht Braunschweig and Preuben Munster on either side of an intensive week of work. The trio, though, will stay behind at Staplewood, nursing what the club view as minor knocks.

Jander’s issue arrived early in the summer schedule. The midfielder was forced off during Southampton’s opening pre-season outing against Eastleigh last Saturday, a frustrating halt just as he was trying to build rhythm and stake an early claim.

Azaz and Edozie also miss out at a time when places in Eckert’s Championship plans are very much up for grabs. While the injuries are not understood to be serious, their absence from a key tactical and fitness block in Germany is far from ideal. This is the phase where combinations are tested, pressing triggers drilled, and roles clarified.

For those on the plane, it is an opportunity. With three creative options sidelined, minutes open up for others to impress in the attacking midfield and wide areas against Braunschweig and Munster, as Eckert sharpens the squad’s edge before competitive football returns.

Once back from Germany, the schedule tightens quickly. Southampton launch their EFL Cup campaign against Colchester United, then dive straight into the grind of the Championship with an away trip to Watford.

By then, Saints will hope Jander, Azaz and Edozie have traded the treatment room for the team sheet – because in a season that promises little margin for error, missing pre-season is one thing. Missing the start of the real thing is quite another.
