The idea is seductive on paper: Roma and Manchester United in talks over Manu Kone, and the name Marcus Rashford drops onto the table. A World Cup standout in one direction, an England international in the other. Big names, big numbers, big headlines.

The reality is far less romantic.

Roma know they may have to sacrifice a major asset this summer to stay on the right side of FFP. Kone, fresh from an impressive 2026 World Cup with France, is the obvious candidate. La Gazzetta dello Sport estimates his sale could bring in around €60m, a figure that would reshape Roma’s balance sheet in one move.

Manchester United are in the mix for the midfielder. They have followed his progress, they recognise the profile, they see the upside. But they don’t see €60m value. Not unanimously.

According to the same report, the United hierarchy are split on whether Kone justifies that price. Some inside Old Trafford are reluctant to commit that level of investment, and that internal debate has slowed the push. United are expected to keep talking, to push Roma to soften their stance, to shave that number down.

And this is where Rashford’s name enters the room.

Rashford as a makeweight? Only in theory

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that United could look to include Rashford in discussions, using the forward as leverage in any attempt to bring Kone to Manchester on more favourable terms. On the surface, it sounds like the kind of blockbuster proposal that defines a summer window.

Scratch the surface, and it starts to fall apart.

Rashford’s contract is the first major obstacle. His net salary is reported at around €10m per season, with a further €2.5m in bonuses. Those numbers would not just put him at the top of Roma’s wage bill – they would blow past the rest of Serie A. By some distance.

For a club still juggling FFP and already contemplating a major sale to stay compliant, importing the league’s highest-paid player is not just a stretch. It is almost incompatible with their current financial strategy.

Roma’s stance reflects that. Any move for Rashford, as outlined in the report, would be built around an initial loan, not a permanent transfer. That keeps the door ajar, but only just. Even on a loan, United would be expected to cover a significant portion of his salary to make the numbers remotely workable for the Giallorossi.

And that is where the logic breaks from United’s side. Why would a club trying to regain its competitive and financial footing agree to bankroll a huge chunk of wages for a player they would be sending out, while also compromising their ability to drive a hard bargain on Kone?

A deal that looks glamorous, not realistic

So Rashford’s name has been mentioned. That much is clear. His profile, his age, his status as an England international make him the sort of marquee figure Roma fans dream of seeing walk out at the Stadio Olimpico.

But the structure required to turn that dream into a deal looks wildly complex. Roma would need a loan, a heavily subsidised wage package, and a level of cooperation from United that currently feels remote. United, for their part, are still wrestling with the basic question of whether Kone is worth anything close to €60m.

The upshot is simple: as things stand, Kone to United remains a live, if delicate, negotiation. Rashford to Roma, by contrast, looks more like a headline than a plan.
