Rio Ngumoha's Transfer Saga: Liverpool to Bayern Munich Deal Falls Apart

Rio Ngumoha’s proposed switch from Liverpool to Bayern Munich has dramatically fallen apart, despite what had been described as a full verbal agreement between the teenager and the German giants.

The 17-year-old winger, who arrived at Anfield from Chelsea as one of the most highly regarded prospects of his age group, became an unlikely beacon in a bleak 2025/26 Liverpool campaign. While senior stars laboured, Ngumoha’s cameos crackled with energy and intent, hinting at a player ready to skip a few steps on the traditional development ladder.

Many around Liverpool felt he should have featured far more under former head coach Arne Slot. Now the conversation shifts to what he might become under Andoni Iraola, whose front-foot football and aggressive pressing promise a more natural stage for Ngumoha’s direct, fearless style.

For a moment, that stage looked like it might be in Munich instead.

Bayern’s secret target

Bayern, reshaped under Vincent Kompany and searching for fresh thrust out wide, have been scouring the market for a winger to push Luis Díaz and deepen their attacking options. They failed to land Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona in a £69m move, and quickly turned their attention to Ngumoha.

David Ornstein reported that Bayern had identified the Liverpool youngster as their primary target for the left flank. Ngumoha knew of the interest, and Bayern were ready to move. Liverpool’s stance, though, was blunt: not for sale, and focused on strengthening their attack rather than slicing away one of its brightest emerging pieces.

Behind the scenes, Bayern pushed on anyway.

German reporter Florian Plettenberg later revealed that Ngumoha had been a “secret candidate” in Bayern’s planning, with negotiations running for weeks. By Tuesday, 26 May, Bayern and the player’s camp had, according to Plettenberg, reached a full verbal agreement. Kompany had personally spoken with the teenager and signed off on the move. Ngumoha, in their eyes, was not a project for tomorrow but an immediate backup to Díaz, part of a twin-track pursuit alongside Gordon.

The plan was clear. The Bundesliga champions believed they had their man.

Then it collapsed.

Deal off – for now

Plettenberg reported that the agreement fell apart on Thursday, the proposed transfer now “collapsed” for the time being. No club-to-club agreement had ever been reached, and Liverpool’s insistence that Ngumoha is not for sale remains a major barrier.

Bayern’s attention may now tilt back toward other options such as Brown and Saibari, with their hierarchy waiting to see if they can strike deals at club level. The Ngumoha move, at least in this window, has stalled at the point where intent meets resistance.

For Liverpool, it underlines just how highly the teenager is rated across Europe. Earlier this year, reports suggested figures inside Anfield believe Ngumoha could explode next season, potentially saving the club a significant outlay in the market. Discussions over a new contract have already been floated, a logical next step for a player who has suddenly become a target for serial title winners.

Bayern thought they had stolen a march. Liverpool have, for now, slammed the door. The next word belongs to Iraola and Ngumoha himself, on a pitch that suddenly feels a lot more like home and a lot less like a stepping stone.
