Referee Concussion in Pre-Season Friendly

A pre-season friendly in eastern France turned ugly on Saturday when referee Mathilde Demoncay suffered a concussion after being knocked to the ground while trying to break up a mass confrontation between players.

The 26-year-old official was in charge of a warm-up match between French side Metz and Dutch club Fortuna Sittard at Schlossberg Stadium in Forbach when rising tempers boiled over late in the first half.

What began with a tug of the shirt in the 40th minute quickly escalated. Two opposing players squared up, chests pressed together, words flying. Within seconds, teammates rushed in, the usual pushing and shoving spilling into a full melee.

Demoncay moved towards the heart of it, attempting to separate the players. In the chaos, she was knocked off her feet and fell heavily, video on social media showed. The collision left her on the turf, clutching her arm, as the scuffle raged around a pitch-side sign bearing a bitterly ironic message: “Respect the referee.”

The image was stark. Players arguing. Security and staff sprinting onto the field. The referee lying motionless for several moments on the grass.

Assistant referees, security personnel and medical staff quickly formed a ring around Demoncay, restoring order and assessing her condition. The match paused for several minutes as she received treatment.

Despite the heavy fall, Demoncay initially continued. When play resumed, she carried on in a reduced role as assistant referee, with another official stepping in to take charge in the middle. She lasted until half-time before leaving the field, unable to continue. Local reports later confirmed she had suffered a concussion.

Fortuna Sittard, beaten 3-1 on the day as both clubs build towards their new seasons, referred to the incident in their match report as a “remarkable moment” but offered no further detail. Metz made no mention of the clash or the injury in their own coverage.

A friendly fixture meant to fine-tune tactics and fitness instead left one of the match officials sidelined and raised uncomfortable questions about player conduct and protection of referees — on a pitch where the message to respect them was impossible to miss.
