Real Madrid Targets Rodri for Midfield Revamp

Real Madrid have moved Rodri from long-term fantasy to immediate target, and they are not hiding it.

According to journalist Patrick Berger, senior Real Madrid figures met with the Manchester City midfielder’s representatives on Wednesday afternoon, slipping into a restaurant in Pozuelo, on the outskirts of Madrid, for what is being described as a confidential summit. No club officials on either side have spoken publicly, but the very fact of that meeting tells its own story: this is now a live operation.

Madrid step on the gas

Inside the club, Rodri has been elevated to priority status as Real Madrid look to remodel Jose Mourinho’s midfield. The plan is clear: lock down the player first, then try to prise him away from Manchester City.

Work has already started on that first phase. Madrid are preparing a contract proposal running until 2030, a long-term bet on the Spain international as the anchor of their next great side. Rodri, for his part, is understood to be open to a return to La Liga, even with a year still left on his current City deal and a renewal offer on the table from the Premier League champions.

That offer from City has been sitting there for weeks. No agreement. No breakthrough. The stalemate has encouraged Madrid, who sense a narrow window of opportunity and are trying to drive straight through it.

Inside the Bernabéu offices, the green light is now total. Florentino Perez, initially cautious about the scale and timing of such a move, has been convinced the operation is worth pursuing. The hierarchy has signed off. The pursuit is on.

The €40m problem

The easy part, though, is convincing the player. The hard part will be getting Manchester City to pick up the phone and talk numbers.

So far, there have been no direct negotiations between the clubs. Even before a formal opening bid, a huge gap in valuation is already looming over the deal. City are said to want around €100 million for a midfielder who has just added a Golden Ball-winning World Cup campaign to an already formidable CV. From their perspective, Rodri has never been more valuable, and they intend to price him accordingly.

Real Madrid see it differently. They have set a spending ceiling of €60 million for the operation. That €40 million difference is not a detail; it is the central obstacle standing between Rodri and a return to Spain.

City feel they hold all the cards: a key player, under contract, at his peak, fresh from global recognition. Madrid, meanwhile, are trying to impose their own financial logic on a market that rarely bends to it, especially when dealing with a club as financially powerful as the English champions.

For now, the battle is being fought in the shadows: agents at restaurants, presidents in offices, valuations scribbled on internal documents rather than submitted as bids. The contours of the fight are already clear, though.

Unless one side blinks and softens its stance, this transfer will remain exactly where it is today — an ambitious plan, a willing player, and a €40 million chasm waiting to decide how far Real Madrid are truly prepared to go for the man they want at the heart of Mourinho’s midfield.
