RC Lens Faces Exodus as Key Players Depart

The dismantling of RC Lens’ recent success shows no sign of slowing. The club that only weeks ago still carried the glow of a Coupe de France triumph and a second-place finish in Ligue 1 is watching its key figures file out of the Stade Bollaert one by one.

First went the captain. Adrien Thomasson, a symbol of the project’s stability, walked away on a free to join Stade Rennais. Then the flair. Allan Saint-Maximin, brought in on a short-term deal to add chaos and creativity, departed at the end of his contract. On the touchline, the architect followed: Pierre Sage, the coach who had turned Lens into one of France’s most compelling stories last season, left after just a year to take charge of Crystal Palace.

Now, another pillar has gone.

Sarr the latest to walk away

Malang Sarr, 27, became the latest exit confirmed by Lens on Tuesday, with his contract officially expiring on 30 June. No transfer fee, no extension, just a clean break.

He had arrived in the 2024/25 season as a defender in need of a reset. His deal with Chelsea had been mutually terminated, his career seemingly stuck in neutral. Lens offered him a way back, a demanding stage but also a forgiving one for players willing to work.

Sarr seized it.

At the Stade Bollaert, the former OGC Nice defender and France youth international rebuilt his reputation. Last season alone, he featured 39 times in all competitions, anchoring a back line that underpinned Lens’ charge both in the league and in the cup. He did not just make up the numbers; he became a central piece of the structure.

In total, Sarr leaves with 62 appearances for Les Sang et Or. Two seasons, a trophy, a resurgence.

Now he joins the growing list of free agents on the market, searching for his next club at what should be the peak of his career. For Lens, the question is no longer who they were last season, but how quickly they can reinvent themselves after watching so much of that identity walk out the door.
