North London Clubs Target Key Midfield Transfers

The summer window has not yet exploded into life, but the pieces are being quietly moved into position. In North London, both Arsenal and Tottenham are circling marquee midfield targets, Chelsea are weighing up a major call in goal, and Marcus Rashford once again finds his future hanging in the balance.

Arsenal Move First for Manu Kone

Arsenal appear to have stolen an early march. The club have reportedly agreed personal terms with France midfielder Manu Kone ahead of a potential switch to the Emirates, a move designed to add power and presence to Mikel Arteta’s midfield.

Kone, 25, sits at the heart of Roma’s financial puzzle. Despite reaching the Champions League, the Italian side must sell to stay on the right side of the rules, and Gazzetta dello Sport report they have slapped a €50m (£43.2m) price tag on the player.

For Arsenal, that figure is significant but not prohibitive. Arteta has long chased a deeper, more robust rotation in midfield, and Kone would arrive in his prime years, with the profile to both protect and progress the ball. Roma, though, hold the card that matters most: the fee.

Spurs Ready to Go Big for Sandro Tonali

Across the divide, Tottenham are preparing their own statement. Spurs are described as “increasingly confident” of landing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, even with a £100m valuation attached.

It is an eye-watering number, but this is a different Tottenham. The club, re-energised and intent on backing Roberto De Zerbi, are ready to smash their transfer record for the Italian midfielder. According to The Telegraph, De Zerbi is desperate to bring in his compatriot as the centrepiece of his project.

Tonali’s arrival at Spurs would send a jolt through the Premier League. It would also test Newcastle’s resolve and financial strategy. For Tottenham, though, this is about more than one player; it is a declaration that they intend to live in the same financial postcode as the league’s heavyweights.

Chelsea Keep Watch on Diogo Costa

Stay in London and the focus shifts to Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea continue to monitor Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

The Portugal international has been a long-term name on Premier League shortlists and, after the World Cup, looks increasingly like a player ready for a new stage. Record in Portugal report that Porto will demand around €60m (£51.8m) for their captain.

Chelsea’s goalkeeping department has been in a state of flux for several seasons. Costa, with his shot-stopping pedigree and leadership status at Porto, fits the profile of a long-term No.1. The question is whether Chelsea are ready to commit that level of investment now, or keep him on the radar for one more window.

Rashford Left in Limbo Again

While clubs manoeuvre for fresh faces, one of England’s most recognisable forwards is still waiting for clarity. Marcus Rashford’s future remains unresolved after Barcelona turned down the chance to sign him permanently.

The Spanish champions opted not to trigger a €30m purchase option, despite an impressive loan spell last season. That decision has pushed the ball firmly back into Manchester United’s court.

United have now set a new asking price of £40m for Rashford, and that figure is open to almost everyone. Almost. ESPN report that only two clubs are excluded from the discount: Manchester City and Liverpool will not be allowed to take advantage of the reduced fee.

It leaves Rashford in a familiar position, highly valued but not yet truly settled. As Arsenal weigh up Kone, Spurs chase Tonali, and Chelsea consider Costa, one of the Premier League’s most intriguing questions lingers: who will finally bet big on Marcus Rashford?
