Jose Mourinho Eyes Marc Cucurella for Real Madrid's Left-Back Position
Jose Mourinho has not taken charge of a single Real Madrid training session yet, but the rebuild has already started on his desk.
The Portuguese coach is, according to journalist Ruben Canizares, casting a particularly sharp eye over one position: left-back. And one name keeps coming back across the reports on his screen – Marc Cucurella.
Cucurella on the move?
Cucurella’s situation at Chelsea is drifting towards a crossroads. Minutes have been inconsistent, the project uncertain, and those close to the Spanish defender now see the summer as a realistic moment for a change of scenery.
His entourage believe a transfer could be done for around €45-50 million. That is the bracket they consider fair. Anything significantly above that, Canizares reports, is viewed on their side as simply unrealistic.
For a player who has already experienced La Liga, the Premier League and the pressure of big clubs, a return to Spain – and to the very top – is back on the table.
Madrid, Barcelona and a tug-of-war in the background
Cucurella’s name has quietly resurfaced on the lists of several major clubs in recent weeks. Real Madrid are among those tracking the situation, monitoring developments while they shape the broader plan for the squad. There is interest, but no green light yet on a formal move.
Across the divide, Barcelona are also keeping tabs. The Catalan club know Cucurella well and like the profile, but their familiar financial constraints loom over any potential deal. As with so many of their recent windows, any move would depend heavily on outgoings and room within the budget before they could think seriously about a bid.
So the defender waits. Two giants, both watching. Only one currently in a position to move decisively.
Mourinho’s left-back dilemma
On paper, Real Madrid are not short of options at left-back. They already have three players capable of filling the role. On paper, that should close the door.
Mourinho does not coach on paper.
Reports indicate he remains unconvinced by Alvaro Carreras, who arrived last summer with high expectations but has not fully nailed down the position in the way the incoming manager would like. Carreras is not being discarded, but Mourinho clearly sees room – and a need – for improvement on that flank.
That is where Cucurella’s profile fits. Experienced at the highest level, aggressive, tactically disciplined, and capable of offering balance on the left in both a back four and more flexible systems. For a coach who builds from defensive solidity and structure, the appeal is obvious.
The numbers and the squeeze
There is a catch. Several, in fact.
To bring in Cucurella, Real Madrid would almost certainly have to make space in a department that is already crowded. One of the existing left-backs would need to move on or accept a significantly reduced role. That is a sporting decision, but also a financial one.
Even if Cucurella’s camp insist the right fee lies in the €45-50 million range, Madrid must decide if that outlay on a left-back is the best use of resources when other areas of the squad may demand attention in the coming months.
Mourinho wants more competition and reliability on that side. Cucurella is ready for a new challenge. Chelsea are open to business at the right price. Barcelona are lurking, limited but interested.
The equation is clear. Now it comes down to whether Real Madrid are willing to pay that price – not just in money, but in what, and who, they are prepared to change to make room.
