Marc Cucurella's Rapid Move to Real Madrid

Marc Cucurella didn’t so much choose Real Madrid as get swept up by it.

The Spanish international has revealed his move to the Bernabeu was sealed at such speed that there was barely time to weigh up anything else. Once Madrid called, the rest of the market became background noise.

The left-back, who officially joined Los Blancos this summer, fills one of the few areas Jose Mourinho had pinpointed for reinforcement ahead of the new season. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid had been circling, tracking his situation and waiting for an opening. They never really got one.

Speaking to El Mundo, Cucurella described negotiations that moved at breakneck pace and left little room for doubt.

“I think it all happened in a day and a half or two. As far as I’m concerned, it was much better that way – much quicker, with no headaches,” he said, outlining a process that bypassed the usual weeks of rumours, brinkmanship and uncertainty that trail big transfers.

He had listened to other possibilities. On paper, there were options. In reality, once Real Madrid stepped in, the decision narrowed to a single path.

“At the end of the day, playing for Real Madrid is an honour and not many players can say that, so I had no doubts whatsoever.

“I think both I and those around me – my family – were clear that this was an opportunity we couldn’t turn down, and I’m very happy with the decision we’ve made.”

Leaving La Masia behind

Cucurella’s route to Madrid carries an extra twist: his Barcelona past.

A product of La Masia who made his name away from Camp Nou before moving abroad, he now finds himself wearing the shirt of the club that stands as Barca’s greatest rival. It is the kind of switch that always invites scrutiny in Spain.

For the defender, the move is less about betrayal and more about evolution.

“Life has different stages. In this case, I’ve had to make an important decision and I have no doubts; I think it’s a huge step for me,” he said, framing the transfer as a natural step in a career that has taken him from Barcelona’s academy to the Premier League and now back to Spain’s biggest stage.

“When you’re a child, you dream of playing for the big clubs, and I think Real Madrid is one of them.

“It’s the team with the most Champions League titles in the world and I hope to win trophies with them and have a wonderful spell there.”

Ambition, not nostalgia, is driving this move. Whatever his roots at La Masia, Cucurella is now betting on the club that has built its modern identity around winning Europe.

Mourinho’s hand on the deal

Behind the scenes, Mourinho’s presence loomed large.

The Portuguese coach, back at the Bernabeu helm and intent on reshaping key areas of his squad, quickly identified Cucurella as a priority for the left side of defence. Once contact was made, the message was clear and direct.

“We had a chat and he told me he was really keen to work with me, that I’d settle in very well, and that Real Madrid was a great club.

“Then, that was it – he wished me all the best for the World Cup and said we’d see each other in Madrid.”

For a player weighing up interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, that kind of backing from Mourinho carried weight. This wasn’t a tentative inquiry. It was a manager staking out exactly the profile he wanted.

Reports in Spain have suggested Mourinho pushed especially hard for Cucurella, even to the point of presenting him as the only left-back he truly wanted. Asked about that version of events, the defender kept it light.

“Did he say, ‘It’s either you or I won’t sign any left-back’? No, I don’t know if he said that.”

What is clear is that Mourinho’s conviction helped strip away any lingering doubts. The club’s prestige, the manager’s trust, the chance to compete for the biggest trophies in Europe – all of it arrived in a 48-hour whirlwind that left Cucurella with a simple conclusion.

He had a choice of badges. He chose the one on the Bernabeu touchline, with Mourinho waiting for him in Madrid.
