Arsenal Signs Northern Ireland Starlet Phoenix Blayney
Arsenal have won a fiercely contested battle for one of Northern Ireland’s brightest young prospects, with 15-year-old Phoenix Blayney set to join the club after turning down offers from Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
The Larne youngster impressed during a trial with the Gunners, catching the eye of academy staff and accelerating Arsenal’s move to secure his signature from the NIFL Premiership side. What began as a look at a promising teenager quickly turned into a full-scale push to bring him to north London.
Liverpool and Forest did not back off easily. Both clubs offered Blayney a contract, and he was even spotted at Anfield in full Liverpool kit after being shown around the training facilities. The charm offensive was clear. So was the level of interest.
Arsenal still came out on top.
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, Blayney’s father Alan confirmed that the decision has been made and the deal is in place.
“Everything has been agreed with Arsenal, he just needs to sign the contract,” he said. “It’s done and dusted and a pre-contract will be signed when the time is right.”
The plan is straightforward. Blayney will join up with Arsenal this summer on a pre-contract agreement, before signing professional terms when he turns 17 in November 2027. It is a pathway Arsenal know well. The club have already used the same structure for Marli Salmon and Max Dowman, both of whom signed pre-contracts this season and will move onto professional deals on their 17th birthdays.
For the Blayney family, Arsenal’s offer stood apart in more ways than one.
Alan described the Gunners as the “shining light between them all” when weighing up the interest from Premier League clubs. The football mattered, but so did the feeling.
“Phoenix enjoyed being at Arsenal, he felt a connection there and really likes the coaches,” he explained.
There is also a familiar face waiting for him in London. One of his close friends, Daniel McCarron, has already joined Arsenal, strengthening the pull.
“One of his good friends Daniel McCarron has joined the club and that’s probably one of the reasons too. Him and Daniel play in the same Northern Ireland team,” Blayney’s father added.
For Arsenal, this is another statement in a clear strategy. The club are aggressively targeting elite talent at academy level, determined to stock the pathway with players capable of eventually challenging for first-team places. Inside the academy, Blayney is viewed as one of those top prospects – a player worth beating Liverpool and Forest to, and worth planning years ahead for.
The pre-contract is only the start. The real story will be written in London Colney’s training pitches over the next few seasons.
