Manchester United Pursue Tchouaméni as Casemiro Replacement

Manchester United have gone back to Real Madrid for Aurélien Tchouaméni, refusing to drop a target they have already been knocked back on once this summer.

Casemiro’s move to Inter Miami has left a clear gap at the heart of United’s midfield. The club want a specialist defensive midfielder, someone to anchor the side and restore balance in front of the back four. Tchouaméni, again, sits near the top of that list.

According to The Sun, the France international looked set to stay at the Bernabéu not long ago. Real Madrid rebuffed approaches in January and at the start of the current window, and Tchouaméni was even close to signing a contract extension. The message from Spain was simple: he was part of the plan.

United have tested that stance once more. Their enquiry keeps the 24-year-old firmly among the options being explored as they search for a long-term replacement for Casemiro rather than a short-term patch.

On paper, Tchouaméni fits almost perfectly. Young, physically dominant, tactically disciplined, and comfortable dictating play from deep, he offers exactly the sort of platform United’s more attacking players have lacked in recent seasons.

The contrast with the club’s recent business is stark. André Santos and Youri Tielemans both tilt naturally towards the attacking side of midfield, offering progression and creativity. Tchouaméni is different. His instincts are defensive, his first thought to protect, screen and control.

That is precisely why prising him away will be so difficult.

José Mourinho is counting on Tchouaméni for the 2026–2027 season, and Real Madrid view him as a central piece of their medium-term project. Any attempt by United to drag him out of that picture will mean negotiating against a club that does not want – or need – to sell, and a coach who sees him as non-negotiable.

United have made their move again. Now they must discover how far Real Madrid’s resolve, and Mourinho’s faith in his midfield cornerstone, can be pushed.
