Manchester United Targets Neco Williams for Full-Back Rebuild

Manchester United’s summer rebuild is accelerating, and the search for a new full-back has led them to a familiar Premier League face: Neco Williams.

The former Liverpool defender, now at the heart of Nottingham Forest’s survival fight in recent seasons, has emerged as a target, with United registering their interest as they look to reinforce Michael Carrick’s squad ahead of a Champions League campaign.

Champions League pull, bigger transfer ambitions

Carrick steered United to third place in the Premier League last season, a finish that did more than restore pride. It opened doors.

Champions League football has armed United with a stronger pitch to potential signings, and the club hierarchy is moving aggressively. The plan is clear: at least two, possibly three midfielders, a full-back and a left-winger before the window shuts.

Two of those midfield slots are close to being filled.

Andrey Santos has already completed his medical and signed his contract with United after leaving Chelsea. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal, stating that the Brazilian midfielder has put pen to paper, with only the official club announcement to follow.

Ederson, the Atalanta midfielder, is further along than a simple link but still short of the finish line. United carried out an initial medical check in the United States and now want a second, more detailed look in England amid reported concerns over a previous knee injury.

Romano explained that Ederson is due to undergo that medical in the UK this week. The agreement between United, Atalanta and the player is in place, the terms verbally settled, but the club will not sign off until their medical staff are satisfied. Only then will they report back to Atalanta and Ederson with a final verdict. For now, the transfer sits in that tense space between “all agreed” and “official.”

Williams on the radar

While those midfield deals edge towards completion, attention has shifted to the flanks.

Reliable reporter Sami Mokbel has revealed that United have made contact over a possible move for Nottingham Forest right-back Neco Williams. Writing for BBC Sport, Mokbel stated that both Newcastle United and Manchester United are among the clubs to have formally registered interest in the Wales international, even as Forest continue talks over a new contract.

It is a move that would carry a certain edge. Williams came through Liverpool’s academy, made his name at Anfield and now finds himself potentially on the radar of their fiercest rivals. For United, though, the calculation is straightforward: they need energy, athleticism and depth at full-back, and Williams has proven he can handle the intensity of the Premier League.

Forest, for their part, are under no obligation to sell. Talks over fresh terms are ongoing, and any serious bid would have to match their valuation for a player who has become a key part of their structure.

Midfield plans extend to Manu Kone

United’s midfield rebuild does not end with Santos and Ederson.

Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport reports that the club are weighing up a move for France international Manu Kone, currently at Roma. The 23-year-old has been identified as one of the more attractive options on the market as United seek to deepen and refresh their options in the middle of the pitch.

Roma value Kone at around €50 million and are prepared to listen to offers that meet that figure. There is no fire sale in Rome, no scramble to cash in, but there is an acceptance that a significant bid could change the picture quickly.

For United, it underlines the scale of the project. This is not a light touch or a minor tune-up. This is a squad being reshaped for the demands of domestic and European competition.

Santos secured. Ederson waiting on a decisive medical. Kone under consideration. Williams now firmly on the radar.

United have made their move in the market. The question is how far they are prepared to go to turn interest into signatures.
