Manchester United’s summer rebuild under Michael Carrick has hit its first major internal fault line, with senior figures at Old Trafford divided over a move for AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone.

United have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, reshaping the heart of Carrick’s side ahead of the new Premier League season. He still wants one more midfielder. The club’s recruitment department, though, cannot agree on who that should be.

Kone deal stalls amid internal doubts

Kone, 25, has moved towards the front of United’s shortlist in recent weeks. Reports in Italy claim the club have already agreed personal terms with the France international, who was part of the squad that reached the World Cup semi-finals before losing to Spain earlier this month.

The hard part now is not the contract. It is the conviction.

Roma are said to be demanding a €60 million (£51m) package, and while that fee has not yet been agreed, the more significant obstacle lies inside Old Trafford. According to The Telegraph, the deal does not have “universal backing” among United’s hierarchy, with members of the recruitment team unconvinced that Kone represents the right signing at that price.

So the talks linger. Interest remains, but the green light is missing.

Alternatives under scrutiny

United are not short of options. Bournemouth pair Alex Scott and Tyler Adams are both on the club’s radar, offering different profiles: Scott as a progressive, creative presence; Adams as an industrious, defensive anchor.

High above them on the market’s top shelf sits Aurelien Tchouameni. United are monitoring the Real Madrid midfielder and would consider a move if the Spanish club signal any willingness to sell. For now, that remains a possibility rather than a live negotiation.

Even beyond Kone, there is caution. The same report notes reservations within United over Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. United tried to sign the 22-year-old last summer, only to be met with a £100m valuation from Brighton. Baleba then endured an inconsistent campaign under Fabian Hurzeler, and that has clearly left a mark on the recruitment debate.

The message is clear: United want a midfielder, but they are determined not to repeat past mistakes in the market.

Carrick calm as pre-season gathers pace

While the transfer discussions rumble on in the background, Carrick’s team are quietly building rhythm on the pitch. On Friday, United cruised to a 5-0 win over Rosenborg in Norway, another comfortable step in their pre-season schedule.

“I think we’re in a good place. I think there’s four weeks to go to the start and we’re gradually getting some boys back from the World Cup as we progress,” Carrick said afterwards.

He stressed patience and continuity, focusing on fitness and cohesion rather than headlines. “A little bit of patience and time and trying to keep ahead and, as I said, keeping everyone fit but moving forward is a really good direction to go in. And as it stands right now, I think we’re in a pretty good place. So, the boys will get better as we go.”

On the grass, the trajectory looks promising. Off it, the picture is less straightforward.

United stand at a familiar crossroads: pay big for a target who does not convince everyone, pivot to a younger or cheaper alternative, or wait in the hope that a name like Tchouameni suddenly comes into play. The season is closing in. The midfield gap is still there.

Somewhere between the training pitch and the boardroom, a decisive call on Manu Kone now has to be made.
