Germany's World Cup Plans Hit by Injury to Teenage Sensation Karl

Germany’s World Cup plans have suffered a brutal jolt before a ball has even been kicked. Teenage forward Lennart Karl has been ruled out of the tournament after suffering a serious muscle injury in training, the German Football Federation (DFB) confirmed on Friday.

“Lenny tore a muscle bundle today in the final training session and is ruled out because of this injury. Have a good recovery, we're thinking of you,” read the DFB’s message on Instagram – a short, stark line that underlined the scale of the setback.

The 18-year-old Bayern Munich attacker had arrived at this World Cup as one of the stories of the season. Thrown into the Bundesliga by Vincent Kompany, he forced his way into a title-winning Bayern side and stayed there, his breakthrough campaign turning him from promising prospect into fully-fledged international within months.

That rise made his injury all the more painful for Germany. Karl had just started his first senior match for his country in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Finland, and he did not shrink from the stage: he supplied an assist and looked entirely at home in Nagelsmann’s fluid attack.

Now his tournament is over before it starts.

Ouedraogo called in as Germany scramble for balance

Germany moved quickly to fill the gap, calling up RB Leipzig midfielder Assan Ouedraogo as Karl’s replacement. The switch subtly reshapes Nagelsmann’s squad profile: out goes a direct, attacking wide threat; in comes a midfield presence more comfortable knitting play together than finishing it.

Nagelsmann had already sounded concerned in Chicago on Friday, speaking ahead of Saturday’s friendly against the United States. Even before the scan results, his tone told its own story.

Karl’s injury, he admitted, “didn't look good,” and the youngster was sent to hospital for assessment. The worst fears were soon confirmed.

For a coach who has leaned heavily on energy, movement and youth to refresh Germany’s identity, losing one of his boldest new faces so late in the build-up hits hard.

Neuer waits in the wings

In goal, another storyline is building, this one with a more optimistic edge for Germany. Julian Nagelsmann confirmed that Manuel Neuer will not feature against the US, but the plan remains for the veteran to return in time for Germany’s opening World Cup match against Curacao on June 14.

Neuer’s mere presence in this squad remains a twist in itself. A World Cup winner in 2014 and a defining figure of his generation, the 40-year-old had announced his international retirement almost two years ago. His recall in May surprised many, even in a country used to big World Cup debates around the No 1 shirt.

Nagelsmann, though, made his faith clear.

“At his age, he doesn't need a warm-up phase,” the coach said. “He knows how to handle high-pressure situations. He's on his way to peak fitness. However, we don't want to take any risks tomorrow.”

The message was firm: no panic, no rush, but no doubt either. Neuer, if fit, will be ready.

Germany now head into their final preparations with one rising star cruelly sidelined and one old master edging back towards centre stage. The World Cup has not started, but Nagelsmann’s ability to adapt has already been dragged into the spotlight.
