Gasperini's Bold Move for Greenwood as Roma Pursues Deal with Marseille
Gian Piero Gasperini has decided this one himself. No delegation, no intermediaries, no polite distance. The Roma coach has reportedly picked up the phone to Mason Greenwood and delivered a simple message: wait.
Wait while Roma try to prise him out of Marseille. Wait while the numbers are dragged into line. Wait, because in Gasperini’s mind, Greenwood is the forward around whom he can build a title challenge.
The call, revealed by Corriere dello Sport, underlines just how central the 24-year-old is to Roma’s plans. Gasperini spent much of the 2025-26 season voicing his irritation at a misfiring attack; he now sees the former Manchester United forward as the answer to those complaints, a ready-made solution rather than another gamble.
Roma have already done the hardest part in many big transfers: convincing the player. The Giallorossi are understood to have reached an agreement on personal terms, with Greenwood described as keen on a move to the Stadio Olimpico. On the table is a tiered salary package starting at €4 million net per season, a clear sign of the club’s intent to make him a cornerstone, not a luxury extra.
The path has also cleared elsewhere. Fenerbahce, once seriously in the frame, have stepped back after recent club elections shifted priorities in Istanbul. Their cooled interest has left Roma with a cleaner run at the deal and emboldened the ownership to step in.
Ryan Friedkin is said to be in direct contact with Greenwood’s camp, outlining the role the Englishman would play in the capital. Not just minutes, but responsibility. Not just a squad place, but a defined spot in the attacking hierarchy.
The problem sits, as it so often does, on the balance sheet.
Marseille need to sell. Financial Fair Play pressure has pushed the French club towards cashing in on at least one major asset this summer, and Greenwood’s impressive spell in Ligue 1 has made him a prime candidate. They have set their price: a valuation in the region of €55 million.
Roma are not there yet. Reports suggest the Italians will open with a package worth around €40 million including bonuses, a bid designed to test Marseille’s resolve and the true urgency of their financial situation. Roma are also prepared to propose an initial loan with an obligation to buy, a structure that would spread the impact on their own accounts.
That, though, clashes with Marseille’s need for immediate liquidity to satisfy financial watchdogs. A loan may suit Roma’s books, but a straight sale suits Marseille’s auditors. Somewhere between those positions, a compromise has to be found.
Old Trafford will be watching every twist. When Manchester United sold Greenwood to Marseille, they inserted a significant sell-on clause. Any permanent transfer now would send a slice of the fee back to the Premier League club, topping up their own summer budget without lifting a finger in the market.
Roma, aware of that existing clause, are even willing to build another one into their proposal. The Italian side are reportedly prepared to offer Marseille a sell-on of their own, potentially above 10 per cent, as a way of bridging the valuation gap without pushing the guaranteed fee all the way to €55 million.
For Greenwood, the decision seems largely made. The report indicates he has already begun the process of vacating his home in France, a practical step that usually comes only when a player feels a move is close rather than hypothetical. The Alps, in his mind, are there to be crossed.
Now it is a question of numbers, timing and nerve. Gasperini has shown his hand. Roma have put their project on the table. Marseille have named their price.
Someone will have to bend.
