Casemiro Joins Inter Miami: A New Chapter in Vice City

Casemiro has made his choice. After walking away from Old Trafford this summer, the Manchester United midfielder has set his sights on Inter Miami, with The Athletic reporting that the 34-year-old is intent on making Vice City his new home.

Several offers were on the table. He has opted for the one painted in pink.

A new star for Miami’s superteam

If the move is completed, the Brazilian will step into an already star-studded dressing room featuring Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and German Berterame. For a player who has spent a career surrounded by elite talent at Real Madrid and United, the cast will feel familiar, even if the setting does not.

Interest arrived from across the globe. Casemiro, fresh from a resurgent final season in the Premier League, has instead been drawn to an ambitious MLS project that continues to lure some of the game’s biggest names to South Florida. A five-time Champions League winner does not leave Europe lightly; Miami’s pull clearly runs deep.

Galaxy roadblock and MLS red tape

The path, though, is not clear. LA Galaxy currently hold Casemiro’s MLS “discovery rights”, giving them priority in negotiations under league rules. They have not treated that lightly.

Galaxy held multiple rounds of talks with the player’s camp and put several contract offers on the table, hoping to tempt him to California. The mechanism is designed to stop MLS clubs from bidding each other into a frenzy for the same overseas target, but Casemiro’s stance has created a deadlock. He wants Miami.

That insistence pushes the saga into familiar territory for MLS deal-makers. For Miami to land him, they will almost certainly have to compensate Galaxy, echoing the deal that saw Los Angeles pay Charlotte FC $400,000 for the rights to sign Marco Reus two seasons ago. The league’s rulebook is being tested again by a superstar with a very clear preference.

The DP puzzle and Miami’s financial gymnastics

Even if Galaxy are satisfied, Miami face another problem: they do not have a free Designated Player slot. Messi and others already occupy those coveted places, which means Casemiro’s initial wage must slide in under the roughly $2 million threshold for this season.

That figure does not match his status, so Miami are preparing a workaround they know well. The club are expected to follow the Jordi Alba template from 2023, bringing Casemiro in on Targeted Allocation Money before later promoting him to DP status when a slot opens.

The contract will likely include a non-guaranteed option that triggers a significant pay rise once the roster allows it. This kind of financial creativity has become a calling card for Miami’s front office, which is under pressure to refresh and reinforce a squad that has lurched through a turbulent campaign, including the early-season departure of head coach Javier Mascherano.

A decorated enforcer crosses the Atlantic

Casemiro does not arrive as a fading name living off old glories. His CV is one of the most decorated of the modern era: five Champions League titles and three La Liga crowns with Real Madrid, where he formed the spine of one of football’s great midfields.

His output has remained strong. Last season at Manchester United he scored nine goals in 33 starts, driving them to a third-place finish and back into the Champions League. For a player long defined by interceptions and tackles, that attacking return underlined his evolution into a complete midfielder.

Miami are not just signing a name; they are importing a standard.

Brazil first, then the pink shirt

Before any unveiling in Florida, there is one more chapter in yellow and green. Casemiro has been named in Carlo Ancelotti’s final Brazil squad for this summer’s World Cup, where he will look to add to his 84 caps and extend his influence on the international stage.

Only once his duties with the Seleção are done will he turn fully to MLS life. At that point, he is expected to join an Inter Miami side sitting on 28 points, chasing consistency and attempting to defend their MLS Cup crown under interim coach Guillermo Hoyos.

A serial winner, a restless project, and a league still learning how to handle stars of this magnitude: Casemiro’s next move will test them all.
