Barcelona intensifies pursuit of Julián Álvarez as Deco meets agent

FC Barcelona have moved from admiration to action in their pursuit of Julián Álvarez, with sporting director Deco sitting down face to face with the striker’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, on Wednesday in a decisive step in the chase.

This is no casual enquiry. Barcelona are now preparing a formal opening offer for the 26-year-old Atlético Madrid forward, a proposal expected to land at around €90 million plus performance-related bonuses.

A bid near the financial ceiling

The figure fits neatly within the internal limit the club had set for their new No. 9. The Catalans have been clear for weeks: they will not go beyond €100 million for Álvarez, a line drawn as much by La Liga’s financial rules as by their own restructuring plan.

That ceiling immediately shapes the battlefield. Atlético, for their part, are demanding a very high fee for the Argentina international, fully aware they are negotiating from a position of strength with a player in his prime and a market short on elite centre-forwards.

The deal will be a grind. No one at Barcelona expects a quick breakthrough or a repeat of the relatively straightforward Anthony Gordon operation. This one will be long, complex and tense.

And they are not alone at the table. PSG are described as “strongly determined” to go after Álvarez, while Arsenal continue to keep a close eye on developments, ready to pounce if the numbers or circumstances shift in their favour. The competition only hardens Atlético’s stance.

Flick on the phone, Deco on the front line

Despite the obstacles, Barcelona feel they have edged forward in recent weeks. That belief was reinforced in Wednesday’s meeting with Hidalgo, where the club revisited a key point in their strategy: Álvarez’s own stance.

During those conversations, Barça made it clear they needed a gesture from the player, something that would leave Atlético under no illusions about his preferred destination. The message: if you want Camp Nou, you have to show it.

Inside the club, the sense now is that this gesture has already come. The specifics remain behind closed doors, but the internal reading is that Álvarez has indicated he sees his future in blaugrana, even as other European giants circle.

Hansi Flick has played his part. The Barcelona coach has already spoken with the Argentine forward on several occasions, outlining his role in the project and how he would be used at the heart of the attack. Those calls are not courtesy chats; they are part of a long-term courtship.

Deco, too, has been relentless. He has maintained constant contact with Álvarez’s camp since before the beginning of 2026, building trust and making it clear this is not a last-minute reaction to market chaos but a carefully planned move.

A priority, not an opportunity

Inside Barcelona’s sporting department, Álvarez is treated as a cornerstone, not a bargain to be snapped up if the price drops. The pursuit has been mapped out over time, integrated into the club’s broader sporting planning.

That changes the tone of the negotiations. This is not a case of “if it happens, it happens.” For Barça, Álvarez is a major priority, a striker around whom they can shape the next phase of their attack.

Even so, nobody at the club is getting carried away. There is no talk of inevitability, no premature victory laps. The financial reality bites hard, and Atlético have little incentive to make life easy for a direct rival in Spain and in Europe.

The numbers will decide plenty. Barcelona must balance their desire to land a marquee forward with the constraints that still shadow their accounts. Any offer, even at €90 million plus add-ons, will require careful structuring and, most likely, departures.

Yet the intention is clear. Barcelona plan to push this deal as far as they possibly can, right up to the line of their own financial limits and Atlético’s resistance.

Whether that pressure finally breaks the door open, or leaves Álvarez locked in Madrid a little longer, may well define the shape of Barcelona’s attack for years to come.
