Barcelona Pursues Julian Alvarez with Increased Offer

FC Barcelona are refusing to step away from Julian Alvarez – and the chase is starting to look personal at the very top of the club.

Their initial proposal, worth around €100 million including add-ons, has already been knocked back by Atletico Madrid. The offer remains on the table, but only for a few more days, with a clear expiry date set for the end of the month.

Barcelona, though, are not walking away. According to journalist Santi Ovalle on Cadena SER, the La Liga champions are ready to go higher for the Argentine forward and are prepared to tweak the structure of the deal to try to break Atletico’s resistance.

Barca ready to push to €130m

The current proposal, approximately €100 million payable in six instalments, has not moved Atletico. To unlock the deadlock, Barcelona are willing to increase the overall package to around €130 million, most of it through performance-related add-ons, while keeping the fixed fee essentially unchanged.

It is a calculated gamble: protect the guaranteed outlay, stretch the upside, and test how much Atletico really believe in their hardline stance.

Time, however, is a weapon for both sides. Barcelona’s existing offer lapses at the end of the month, and they are using that deadline to inject urgency into a negotiation that has stalled more than once.

Laporta steps in above sporting department

The stalemate has already reshaped the internal power lines at Camp Nou. President Joan Laporta has now taken direct control of the talks with Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin after a breakdown at sporting-director level.

Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany did not respond to the formal proposal sent by Deco, Barcelona’s sporting chief. With no working relationship between the two, Deco’s offer never even reached Atletico’s senior decision-makers, according to the same report.

That snub has pushed Laporta to the front of the operation. The president is now leading the attempt to open a proper executive-level channel with Atletico, bypassing the friction lower down the chain.

Atletico hold the line

On the other side of the table, Atletico’s message has not shifted an inch. Club sources continue to insist they will not negotiate Alvarez’s sale to Barcelona.

All summer, the stance has been the same, regardless of noise around the player. Alvarez has publicly expressed his desire to leave, yet Atletico have responded by pulling him back into the fold, instructing him to report for pre-season training on August 10 under Diego Simeone and his staff.

For Atletico, the signal is clear: contract first, market later.

Barcelona are banking on that position softening. They hope for another public gesture from Alvarez, something that would crank up the pressure on Atletico’s hierarchy and test how long they can ignore a player pushing for the exit.

Few alternatives for Flick

While the Alvarez saga drags on, Barcelona cannot afford to stand still. The club continue to scan the market for alternative options, but internally there is a strong belief that very few forwards match the specific profile Hansi Flick wants for his attack.

That scarcity is exactly why Barcelona keep circling back to Alvarez, why they are ready to stretch the deal towards €130 million, and why Laporta has stepped out of the boardroom and into the front line of negotiations.

Atletico are holding firm. Barcelona are pushing harder. Somewhere between those two positions lies the answer to a question that could shape both clubs’ seasons: who blinks first?
