Australia and Paraguay Battle for World Cup Knockout Spot from Group D
On Thursday, Australia and Paraguay will meet in their final group match at the 2026 World Cup, with one team guaranteed to advance automatically to the knockout stage.
Australia opened Group D by beating Turkey 2-0, while Paraguay lost 4-1 to co-hosts USA. The second round saw Australia fall 2-0 to the USA, and Paraguay narrowly beat Turkey 1-0 despite being down to ten men.
New Rules Favor Head-to-Head Records Over Goal Difference
This World Cup has changed how ties are broken. Instead of goal difference deciding the rankings after points, the head-to-head record between tied teams now takes priority.
USA have already secured first place and a knockout spot, while Turkey is out. This leaves Australia and Paraguay fighting for second place.
The winner on Thursday claims second place with 6 points and a guaranteed path forward. The loser, stuck on 3 points, will rely on their ranking among the best eight third-placed teams to advance.
If the match ends in a draw, both teams will finish with 4 points. Because Australia currently holds a neutral goal difference (0) compared to Paraguay's -2, Australia would take second place. Paraguay would then hope that 4 points are enough to be among the top third-place finishers.
How Head-to-Head Results Shape Group Rankings
When teams tie on points, the direct results between those teams decide who ranks higher. If one team beat the other in their matchup, that team moves ahead.
For groups where multiple teams share the same points, a mini-league forms considering only matches between those tied teams. Ranking factors include points earned in those matches, then goal difference, followed by goals scored. Should that fail to separate teams, overall group goal difference and goals scored are checked next.
Additional Tie Breakers
If teams remain even after all these criteria, the Team Conduct Score (TCS) comes into play. This fair play rating deducts points for cards received:
- Yellow card: -1 point
- Red card for two yellows: -3 points
- Straight red card: -4 points
- Yellow plus straight red: -5 points
The team with fewer deductions ranks higher. If still tied, FIFA rankings from June 2026 decide the outcome.
Determining the Best Third-Placed Teams
The top eight third-place teams progress based on points earned. If more than eight teams share the same points, goal difference decides who advances.
Teams with four or more points as third-place finishers are very likely to move on. Those with three points must rely on strong goal differences to qualify.
