Arsenal's Second Bid for Bruno Guimaraes: Newcastle's £100m Stance

Arsenal are preparing to test Newcastle United’s resolve again over Bruno Guimaraes, with a second bid expected for the Brazilian midfielder, according to Ben Jacobs.

Mikel Arteta has made the 26-year-old a priority as he looks to harden the spine of a squad that has gone close, but not close enough, in the title race. Arsenal want Guimaraes at the Emirates this summer. Guimaraes, for his part, has made it clear he wants the move.

Newcastle, though, are drawing a line.

A £100m problem

Newcastle have slapped a valuation of at least £100 million on their captain. Arsenal’s initial verbal offer, understood to be roughly half that figure, barely scratched the surface.

Any follow-up proposal will have to land far closer to Newcastle’s asking price to even bring them to the table. The club insist Guimaraes is not for sale, and they are under no pressure to cash in: his current deal runs for another two years, with the option of a further year in the club’s favour.

That contract strength gives Newcastle time and leverage. It also forces Arsenal into a decision of their own: how far are they really willing to go?

Arsenal’s stance: firm interest, fixed valuation

Inside the Emirates, the view is clear. Arsenal have a defined valuation for Guimaraes and will not be dragged into a bidding war that blows up their wage and fee structure.

They want him. They believe he fits the technical and tactical profile Arteta craves in the middle of the pitch. But they will only push on if Newcastle show a genuine willingness to negotiate and meet somewhere in the middle.

If that door stays shut, Arsenal will walk away.

Alternatives on the radar

The recruitment team has already lined up contingency plans. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is among the alternatives under consideration, with the young midfielder seen as a high-upside option if the Guimaraes pursuit stalls.

Sporting director Andrea Berta is also working through a broader shortlist of midfielders, ensuring Arsenal are not left scrambling late in the window if Newcastle refuse to budge.

At the back, the club have moved more decisively. French goalkeeper Illan Meslier has arrived to bolster the defensive unit, a sign that Arsenal are determined to upgrade across the pitch, not just in midfield.

For now, though, the spotlight stays on Guimaraes. Newcastle have a prized asset under contract and no need to sell. Arsenal have a clear plan and a limit they do not want to cross.
