Arsenal's Pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes Intensifies
Arsenal’s first move for Bruno Guimaraes has been swatted away, but the Premier League champions are not walking away from the table just yet.
The London club have stepped up a long-running pursuit of the Newcastle United midfielder, opening talks with the player’s camp and then following up with a proposal to St James’ Park. That opening gambit, believed to be around £55 million, has been rejected out of hand by Newcastle, who have made it clear they are not entertaining a sale at that price.
Arsenal test Newcastle’s resolve over Guimaraes
Interest from Arsenal in Guimaraes is nothing new. The Brazilian has been on their radar for some time, and Newcastle’s failure to qualify for Europe has only intensified speculation over key players on Tyneside.
Over the past 24 hours, that interest has hardened into action. Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Arsenal initially made what he described as an “exploratory approach” to Guimaraes’ representatives, mirroring similar groundwork laid by Manchester United before the window opened. At that stage, there had been no formal contact with Newcastle, who, as Jacobs underlined, do not wish to sell.
That stance has since been tested. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Arsenal moved beyond sounding out the player’s side and went directly to Newcastle with an offer. The figure, again, is understood to be in the region of £55m.
Newcastle’s response was blunt. Romano reported that the club “closed the doors” on any deal at that level, refusing to countenance a sale for a fee they clearly regard as below Guimaraes’ value. The midfielder, for his part, is said to be leaving the situation in Newcastle’s hands and showing full respect to the club’s position.
Brazilian outlet GeGlobo also reported that a £55m bid from Arsenal had been rejected, but crucially added that the Gunners intend to return with an improved offer. The chase is alive, just nowhere near the finish line.
Midfield and wide reinforcements on Arsenal’s agenda
Guimaraes is not the only name on Arsenal’s summer shortlist. The champions want a new central midfielder and a left-sided attacking option, and have identified Guimaraes and Morgan Rogers as leading candidates for those roles.
The pursuit of Guimaraes, a proven Premier League operator and Champions League-level performer, fits Mikel Arteta’s drive to add more control and personality in the middle of the pitch. Arsenal’s willingness to go straight in at a hefty figure, even if it falls short of Newcastle’s demands, underlines how highly they rate the Brazilian.
Whether Newcastle’s hardline stance softens as the window develops is another matter. For now, they are standing firm, and Arsenal know they will have to stretch significantly beyond their first offer if they want to prise one of Eddie Howe’s key men away from Tyneside.
Arsenal close in on Jeremy Monga
While the Guimaraes saga looks set for a longer run, Arsenal are more optimistic about landing Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga.
Their first attempt there also met resistance. Leicester rejected an opening bid on Thursday, described as “cheeky” given Monga’s potential and the Foxes’ bargaining position. Yet the dynamic is different from the Guimaraes situation.
According to Football Insider, Arsenal are “confident of finalising a deal” for Monga this summer. Discussions between the two clubs are ongoing as they try to agree a fee and avoid the uncertainty of a tribunal. Crucially, the player is understood to be willing to make the move to the Premier League champions, a factor that strengthens Arsenal’s hand as talks continue.
Two very different pursuits, one clear message. Arsenal are moving aggressively in the market, and they are aiming high. The question now is whether Newcastle’s resolve over Bruno Guimaraes can be broken, or if the champions will have to turn that ambition elsewhere.
