US World Cup Final Breaks Records as Soccer's Popularity Surges

Record-Breaking Viewership for World Cup Final in the US

The FIFA World Cup final on Sunday attracted more than 62.8 million viewers across the United States, making it the most-watched World Cup final and soccer broadcast ever in the country.

Why This Matters

This milestone highlights soccer's expanding fanbase in the US and suggests media rights for future tournaments will become more valuable.

Viewership Details

The match ended with Spain defeating defending champion Argentina 1–0 in extra time. It also set a record as the most-watched soccer event on Spanish-language TV, according to Telemundo.

  • Almost 39 million viewers watched on Fox, which holds exclusive English-language rights. This represents a 132% increase from the 2022 final.
  • Nearly 24 million tuned in via Telemundo's Spanish broadcast, a 166% rise compared to 2022.

Live TV World Cup Viewership in the US

These numbers include both English and Spanish broadcasts. Nielsen ratings, starting in 2020, factor in out-of-home and streaming views.

Streaming's Growing Role

Fox One, Fox's streaming platform, saw June become its biggest month for new subscribers during the tournament. It added about 2.8 million first-time users, more than doubling its previous record from January's NFL playoffs.

Peacock, which streams Telemundo, gained an estimated 3.75 million new subscribers in June. Streaming accounted for nearly half of Telemundo's World Cup audience, rising from 30% in 2022.

Telemundo's lively commentary, fewer commercial interruptions, and Peacock's lower cost attracted viewers beyond just Spanish speakers.

Factors Behind the Surge

Hosting the tournament in the US, a competitive US men's team, and wider streaming options combined to draw record audiences.

Fox reported the US opener against Paraguay on June 12 became the most-watched FIFA Men's World Cup telecast in English-language US history with 18 million viewers. Later, the US win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 hit 26.4 million viewers, setting a record for any soccer game in America on English TV.

The US loss to Belgium on July 6 topped that with 37.2 million viewers on Fox plus 12.9 million on Telemundo, totaling over 50 million. Mexico versus England on July 5 also drew close with 46.7 million combined viewers.

Context and What’s Next

The FIFA World Cup has long drawn the largest global TV audiences for any recurring event. The 2022 final between Argentina and France previously held the worldwide record with 1.42 billion viewers.

Live sports remain rare in their ability to attract huge real-time audiences, fueling advertising and streaming growth. FIFA tried appealing to a broader crowd by including its first halftime show at a World Cup final.

FIFA plans to open media rights bidding for the 2030 World Cup soon. Current contracts with Fox and Telemundo run through 2026 after being extended without competition for 2022.

Reports suggest English and Spanish US rights may be sold together in 2030. Companies like Netflix, Disney, and YouTube are reportedly interested in bidding.
