World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Update: France, Argentina, Norway Join USA, Mexico, Germany in Round of 32
As Matchday 2 wraps up, the lineup for the Round of 32 in the 2026 World Cup is becoming clearer. The United States and Mexico, two of the tournament's co-hosts, have already secured top spots in their groups, ensuring their advance to the knockout rounds. Canada has collected four points so far and faces Switzerland in a key match that will decide the winner of Group B.
A total of 32 teams will move on from the group stage. This includes the top two teams from each group plus the eight best third-place finishers.
FIFA Tie-Break Rules Explained
When teams end up equal on points, FIFA applies these criteria to separate them:
- First, points earned in matches among the tied teams, then goal difference in those matches, followed by goals scored in those same matches.
- If still tied, overall goal difference in all group matches, then total goals scored, and finally team conduct scores based on yellow and red cards.
- If no decision emerges, rankings from the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking are used.

- Argentina
- France
- Norway
The U.S. sealed Group D early with wins over Paraguay and Australia. They face a third-place team from Groups B, E, F, I, or J on July 1 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
Mexico dominated Group A with clean sheets against South Africa and South Korea. Their Round of 32 match is set for June 30 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where they'll meet a third-place side from Groups C, E, F, H, or I.
Germany topped Group E after victories over Curaçao and Ivory Coast. A goalless draw between Ecuador and Curaçao confirmed their place. They play a third-place team from Groups A, B, C, D, or F on June 29 in Boston.
Argentina secured their knockout spot with a win over Austria. Algeria's later victory over Jordan clinched Group J for them. Argentina will wrap up group play against Jordan on Saturday before facing Group H's runner-up on July 3 in Miami.
France and Norway both advanced from Group I with wins on Monday. Their upcoming clash in Boston will determine who tops the group and may influence their Round of 32 paths.
Teams Out of the Tournament
- Haiti
- Türkiye
- Tunisia
- Jordan
Haiti, making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, are still searching for their inaugural win after losses to Scotland and Brazil. Their final match is against Morocco.
Expectations were high for Türkiye in Group D, but two losses to Australia and Paraguay ended their run early. They will face the U.S. on Thursday in Los Angeles, marking a tough exit after their strong 2002 showing.
Tunisia began with a heavy 5-1 loss to Sweden. The coaching change to Hervé Renard didn’t stop a 4-0 defeat to Japan, knocking them out before their last group game.
Jordan needed a result against Algeria to stay alive but fell short. Algeria’s win ensured Jordan’s elimination ahead of their final game against Argentina.
New Knockout Bracket Format
This edition introduces two separate paths to the semifinals, preventing the top two ranked teams from meeting before the final if they top their groups. For example, Spain (top-ranked) and defending champion Argentina (second-ranked) were placed in opposite brackets. Similarly, France and England, ranked third and fourth, are kept apart until the semifinals if they progress. This setup means the highest-ranked sides won’t cross paths too early, preserving potential marquee matchups late in the tournament.
