Tottenham Signs Sandro Tonali After Arsenal Declines Opportunity

Tottenham Hotspur have smashed through the £100million barrier to land Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United – and they’ve done it after Arsenal turned down the chance to bring the Italian to the Emirates.

Tonali, 26, is now set to become the second player to break Spurs’ transfer record in the same summer. Matheus Fernandes is already on his way from West Ham United in an £85million move, and together the pair will rip up and rewrite Ange Postecoglou’s midfield.

Two of the most coveted central midfielders on the Premier League market. Both heading to north London. Neither wearing red.

Arsenal say no as Spurs go all in

According to ChronicleLive, Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso went to Arsenal first. He is said to have offered the Gunners the chance to move for his client, only for them to walk away from the table.

The reason was simple and brutal: money.

Arsenal are understood to have balked at Tonali’s wage demands, with the Italy international in line to earn around £275,000 per week at Tottenham on a six-year contract. On top of that, Riso is reported to have sought a 10 per cent agent’s cut, pushing the overall cost even higher for any buyer.

Tottenham did not flinch.

football.london reports Spurs will pay an initial £92.5million, with a further £7.5million due if they hit Champions League qualification targets. An opening offer of around £80million went in first. When Spurs came back and effectively added another £20million, Newcastle’s stance shifted and the deal was sealed.

Tonali’s path out of Newcastle

Riso has never hidden the ambition behind Tonali’s move to England. Speaking in March, he laid out the plan.

“Exactly, that was the goal from the moment he went to England – to try to make him a star player. I think he's the Italian footballer with one of the highest values in the world,” he said, explaining how Newcastle’s financial muscle made the original transfer possible.

“The deal came about because a club like Newcastle, with unlimited financial resources, had decided to invest in Sandro. We considered the idea of having the player play in a higher-level league.”

Now, with Newcastle under pressure to balance their books after heavy spending in recent windows, Tonali becomes the latest big asset to go.

Newcastle cash in – and dig in

Anthony Gordon has already brought in £80million this summer. Tonali’s £100million pushes the total even higher and gives Newcastle vital breathing room in the market and against financial regulations.

It also hardens their position on others.

Arsenal’s long-standing interest in Bruno Guimaraes is no secret. The Gunners tracked the Brazilian as far back as his days at Atletico Paranaense in 2020 and have continued to monitor him since his move to Tyneside. But every major sale makes another one less likely.

With Gordon gone and Tonali set to follow, Newcastle’s resolve around their captain only strengthens.

Club chief executive David Hopkinson flagged the club’s stance months ago. Reflecting on the possibility of departures, he said: “We think through what players might or might not want to do this summer.

“But if an [Alexander] Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms. And we're going to maximise the opportunity that might represent for the club.”

Tonali has become that scenario. Guimaraes, for now, does not.

North London’s midfield arms race

For Tottenham, this is a statement. Two marquee midfielders, one window, both arriving at the peak of their careers. A department that once looked flimsy now bristles with power, technique and depth.

For Arsenal, it is a calculated refusal. They have chosen their wage structure over Tonali’s star power and watched their rivals cross the line instead.

The question now is simple: when the new season opens and the north London derby rolls around, whose midfield rebuild will look wiser on the pitch?
