Tottenham Signs Andy Robertson on Free Transfer as De Zerbi Era Begins

Tottenham have moved decisively in the early days of the Roberto De Zerbi era, securing the signing of Andy Robertson on a free transfer after the Scotland captain chose to end his long stay at Liverpool.

The left-back will officially join Spurs on 1 July, walking away from Anfield at the end of his contract after 378 appearances and a haul of major honours that turned him into one of the Premier League’s defining full-backs of the last decade.

This is not a deal conjured up overnight. Tottenham pushed hard for Robertson in January, sensing an opportunity as his Liverpool future edged towards a crossroads. The move was close then, but collapsed when Liverpool failed to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma, forcing the Anfield club to shut the door on a mid-season exit.

The door has stayed open in north London.

New head coach De Zerbi has wasted no time putting his stamp on the squad and made clear he wanted Robertson as part of it. The Italian gave the move his approval as soon as it became clear the defender would not renew at Liverpool.

“Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” he said. “He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”

For Tottenham, it is a statement of intent: a serial winner, still an international captain, arriving without a fee but with a wealth of know-how from title races, European nights and high-pressure finals.

For Robertson, it is a new chapter in England after a storied Liverpool career. The runs down the left, the relentless pressing, the vocal edge – all of it now shifts to a different shade of red and white, under a manager who prizes aggressive, front-foot football.

Tottenham wanted him in January. They have him now, on their terms, at the start of a new project.
