Tottenham's Midfield Rebuild: Targets Tonali, Fernandes, and Scott
Tottenham’s midfield rebuild is starting to look like an obsession rather than a project.
Roberto De Zerbi has made the centre of the pitch the focal point of his first major transfer window in north London, and the names on his list are anything but modest: Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and now Alex Scott, one of the most coveted young midfielders in the Premier League.
Tonali: The £100m statement target
Tonali sits at the top of Tottenham’s wish list. The Newcastle midfielder has been a constant presence in Spurs’ recruitment discussions in recent weeks, with the club holding talks with his representatives throughout June.
Those close to the negotiations say the Italy international is open to the move. He is understood to be keen on a switch to north London if the clubs can agree a fee, a significant development given Newcastle’s stance.
That is where the difficulty begins. Newcastle value Tonali at around £100 million. Tottenham have already tested the waters with an opening offer in the region of £80m, only to see it knocked back by the Magpies. The numbers tell the story: if Spurs want Tonali, they will have to go to the very top of their financial range.
Even so, his name continues to headline their summer strategy. De Zerbi wants more authority, more experience, more personality in that area of the pitch. Tonali ticks every box.
Mateus Fernandes: Progress on a London rival
Tonali is not the only major play in motion.
Across the capital, West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes has emerged as another serious target. The Portugal international enjoyed a standout season in east London and has quickly become one of the most talked-about midfielders in the division.
Tottenham have not been slow to move. Multiple reports indicate Spurs have already made progress on the player’s side, with Fernandes said by some outlets to be close to agreeing personal terms.
The Independent went further this week, reporting that positive discussions have also taken place between Tottenham and West Ham over a deal that could climb to around £85 million. That is heavyweight money, and it underlines how aggressively Spurs are pushing to reshape their midfield.
The message from the club is clear: this is not tinkering. This is surgery.
Dubravka deal underlines squad evolution
While the marquee midfield moves are still being negotiated, Tottenham have already completed business elsewhere.
Martin Dubravka has arrived on a free transfer after leaving Burnley, giving De Zerbi another experienced option in goal. The former Newcastle man spent last season at Turf Moor and now adds depth and competition in a position Spurs have been keen to reinforce.
It is not the kind of deal that dominates headlines, but it fits a pattern. De Zerbi is steadily remodelling the squad, piece by piece, blending headline pursuits with smart, low-risk additions.
Alex Scott: Bournemouth dig in as big clubs circle
The next name on the list takes this midfield hunt in a younger direction.
Alex Scott has caught Tottenham’s eye after a rapid rise at Bournemouth. According to Sky Sports, Spurs are among several clubs targeting the 22-year-old, who has grown into one of Bournemouth’s most important players since his move from Bristol City.
Over the last two seasons, Scott’s performances have dragged him into the orbit of the Premier League’s elite. Sky’s live blog notes that Tottenham are one of three top-flight clubs currently showing firm interest.
Arsenal and Manchester United have already made their move. Both clubs are believed to have lodged initial enquiries for the midfielder, who is valued at around £60 million. Both were rebuffed.
Bournemouth’s stance could not be clearer: they do not want to sell Scott in this window. The Cherries have pushed that message directly to every interested club. Rather than preparing for a windfall, they are working to lock down his future.
Talks are already under way over a new contract, with Bournemouth hopeful the midfielder will continue his development on the south coast under newly-appointed head coach Marco Rose. Keeping Scott and building around him remains the preferred scenario.
A rising star, and a test of resolve
Scott’s reputation has surged despite missing out on England’s World Cup squad this summer. He was reportedly under strong consideration before ultimately being left out of the final group, yet his club form has ensured his name stays lodged firmly on the lists of the biggest sides.
For Tottenham, he represents a different kind of signing to Tonali or Fernandes: younger, still shaping his game, but with a ceiling that excites recruitment departments across the league.
The question now is whether Spurs are willing to test Bournemouth’s resolve in the same way they are pushing Newcastle and West Ham. Three targets, three difficult negotiations, one clear theme.
De Zerbi wants his midfield rebuilt in his image. How far will Tottenham go to give it to him?
