Sancho Leaves Manchester United as Club Confirms Exit
Manchester United have drawn a firm line under the Jadon Sancho saga, confirming they will not activate the one-year extension in his contract and that the winger will leave the club this summer.
His name appeared on United’s retained and released list published on Wednesday morning, alongside senior departures Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia and a clutch of academy players. For Sancho, it closes a strange, fragmented chapter at Old Trafford that never came close to matching the fanfare of his £73m arrival from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021.
A big signing who never truly arrived
Sancho was supposed to be the crown jewel of United’s attack, the long-awaited solution on the right flank. Instead, his United career has been defined by absence and elsewhere.
He has spent the past three seasons on loan at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa, a remarkable carousel that brought with it a unique achievement: three European finals with three different clubs, in three different competitions. Most recently, he was part of the Aston Villa squad that beat Freiburg in last month’s Europa League final.
Yet his contribution in a United shirt has been almost non-existent for nearly a year. Aside from an 83rd-minute substitute appearance in the 2024 Community Shield, Sancho has not played for the club since 26 August 2023.
The break came quickly and publicly. Left out of the squad for the trip to Arsenal the following week, he responded with a pointed social media post that triggered an open rift with then-manager Erik ten Hag. From that moment, a permanent return felt remote. Now it is officially off the table.
Casemiro and Malacia follow him out
Sancho is not leaving alone. Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, whose exits had already been announced, also depart after being honoured on the pitch by head coach Michael Carrick following the final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on 17 May.
Casemiro’s time at United brought flashes of authority and big-game influence before fading, while Malacia’s spell was disrupted by injury. Both were given a public send-off. Sancho was not. His farewell comes via a document rather than a lap of appreciation, which says plenty about how far the relationship had drifted.
Academy reshaped, next generation moves up
United’s list also underlined a changing of the guard in the academy.
Youngsters Sonny Aljofree – who spent the first half of last season on loan at Notts County – James Bailey and Malachi Sharpe will all leave when their contracts expire on 30 June. Their exits mark another quiet churn beneath the first team, the kind of turnover that rarely makes headlines but steadily reshapes a youth system.
There is movement in the opposite direction too. The club have confirmed offers for Albert Mills and Dante Plunkett to sign professional deals in July, a significant step for two prospects viewed as part of the next wave. There is, however, no update on England youth international Godwill Kukonki, scorer of United’s goal in the FA Youth Cup final, leaving his situation unresolved for now.
Further down the ladder, it is anticipated that Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick will become scholars for the forthcoming season, familiar surnames beginning their own journeys in United colours.
A clean break and an open question
For United, declining Sancho’s option is both a financial decision and a symbolic one. The club cuts loose a high-profile, high-wage signing who never settled into its plans, and clears space – on the wage bill and in the dressing room – for a new direction under Carrick.
For Sancho, the picture is more intriguing. Still only in his mid-twenties, with European finals on his CV for Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa, he leaves Old Trafford as a player whose biggest moments have come everywhere but the club that paid the biggest fee.
The chapter is closed. The real question now is where he finally finds a home worthy of his talent.
