Rodri: The Key to Mourinho and Perez's Vision for Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho and Florentino Perez have identified the man they want to build Real Madrid’s next great midfield around – and he doesn’t wear white yet.

He wears Manchester City blue. His name is Rodri.

Mourinho, Perez and a shared vision

Behind the scenes at the Santiago Bernabeu, the conversations have gone far beyond contracts and job titles. According to sources, Mourinho and Perez have spent this month locked in extensive talks, not only about the Portuguese coach’s sensational return, but about the spine of the team he would inherit.

At the heart of it all: the midfield.

Both men are said to be in complete agreement that Real Madrid never truly replaced the influence, control and leadership once provided by Toni Kroos and Luka Modric at their peak. The shirts have been filled, the roles reallocated, but the aura has gone.

Rodri, as first revealed months ago, has been sitting at the top of their wish list. Now, crucially, Mourinho is fully on board with the plan to go after the Manchester City midfielder. He doesn’t just approve; he reportedly sees Rodri as the cornerstone of a new project.

For Mourinho, the Spain international is the player who can restore authority and balance in the middle of the pitch. For Perez, he is the calibre of footballer who can become the heartbeat of the next great Real Madrid side.

Those close to the discussions insist the pair are aligned: they believe Rodri’s composure, tactical intelligence and relentless winning mentality are exactly what the current squad lacks.

A three-year pact for a second era

Amid those strategic talks, the framework for Mourinho’s own return has been put in place.

TEAMtalk understands Mourinho has agreed a three-year contract in principle to take charge of Real Madrid for a second spell. The deal is effectively set, even if the club are not expected to make anything official until after Benfica finish their season against Estoril on Sunday.

In recent weeks, Mourinho has been in regular contact with Perez as the club examined their managerial options. Concern has been growing at board level over the direction of the squad under interim boss Alvaro Arbeloa, who stepped in at the turn of the year after Xabi Alonso’s departure.

Arbeloa has his admirers within the hierarchy. Elements of his work have been appreciated. But when the conversations turned to the next phase, to rebuilding and reasserting control in a dressing room full of big personalities, the conclusion was clear: Real Madrid wanted a more experienced figure.

Jurgen Klopp, Zinedine Zidane and Didier Deschamps all came under consideration. Names of that weight were discussed internally, and talks were held with multiple candidates.

Mourinho, though, quickly emerged as the preferred choice. His track record, his authority, his certainty that he can restore professionalism and unity to a fractured dressing room – all of it resonated with Perez and his inner circle.

Discipline, feuds and a stronger hand in decisions

The appeal of Mourinho in Madrid has never been just about tactics. It has always been about control.

During negotiations, the Portuguese coach addressed the recent training-ground altercation between Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni directly with Perez. The incident, which Real Madrid publicly downplayed, has nonetheless raised internal questions about discipline and the balance of power in the squad.

Officially, the club insist that neither Valverde nor Tchouameni faces an immediate threat to his future because of the clash. Privately, insiders acknowledge that Mourinho will have significant influence over how the squad is managed from here, and how standards are enforced.

This time, Real are also prepared to give him more say in player decisions than previous head coaches have enjoyed. That does not mean handing him the keys to the transfer department. Perez and the hierarchy will still retain overall control of recruitment strategy.

Those close to Mourinho insist he has not demanded full control, despite the reputation that often follows him from club to club. What he wanted, they say, was alignment – a shared understanding of what is required to push Real Madrid forward again.

On that front, there is now a clear consensus. Especially when the conversation turns to Rodri.

Rodri as the anchor of a new Madrid

Inside the club, the view is firm: the Manchester City midfielder possesses the experience, leadership and tactical qualities to anchor the next phase of the project. He is not seen as a luxury signing, but as the structural piece that allows everything else to fall into place.

Mourinho’s assessment runs along the same lines. He sees Rodri as a dominant midfield presence capable of transforming the entire team’s structure, a player around whom both defensive solidity and attacking rhythm can be built.

With terms agreed in principle for Mourinho’s return and planning already advancing behind the scenes, Real Madrid are bracing for a dramatic new era.

An era that could be defined not only by the comeback of one of their most polarising coaches, but by a blockbuster attempt to prise one of the Premier League’s biggest stars out of Manchester – and drop him straight into the centre of the Bernabeu.
