Real Madrid Open to Selling Tchouameni Amid Manchester United Interest

Manchester United’s search for a true defensive midfielder has led them back to a familiar shop window – and a familiar club. This time, the name at the top of the list is Aurelien Tchouameni, and Real Madrid are ready to talk.

United have made a formal enquiry for the France international as they look for a specialist No 6 to anchor their rebuilt midfield. Sources in Madrid describe United’s interest as “strong”, with the club moving quickly now that Tchouameni’s World Cup campaign with France is over.

Crucially, Madrid are willing to sell. Jose Mourinho, newly installed at the Bernabeu, had initially intended to keep Tchouameni as part of his core midfield group, but the 15-time European champions are prepared to cash in if a suitable offer arrives.

Tchouameni cost Madrid an initial €80m, rising to €100m, when he joined from Monaco four years ago. He is tied to the Bernabeu until 2028, which puts Madrid in a powerful negotiating position, but the landscape around him has shifted.

Rodri links sharpen United interest

Madrid have been heavily linked with a move for Spain star Rodri, recently named the best player at the World Cup. The Manchester City midfielder, 30, is out of contract next year and a transfer this summer has been widely touted. If Madrid push ahead with that plan, Tchouameni becomes the obvious sale to help fund and clear space for another elite holding midfielder.

United, meanwhile, are trying to solve a problem they have dodged for years. They have already signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to deepen their midfield options, but neither is a pure defensive midfielder. Tchouameni is.

At 26, with a Champions League winner’s medal and a World Cup final start on his CV, he fits almost perfectly into United’s current recruitment template: prime age, proven at the highest level, and still with room to grow. The club has prioritised players in the 22–26 age bracket, and Tchouameni sits right in the middle of it.

A chance missed, revisited

United know they could have had him earlier. Tchouameni was offered to them in 2021 while he was still at Monaco, but the club had not budgeted for a midfield signing. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in charge at the time, wanted a midfielder and pushed for Declan Rice instead. The moment passed, Madrid pounced, and United watched from a distance.

The irony runs deeper. Madrid moved for Tchouameni in 2022 to replace Casemiro – the same Casemiro United had just prised away in a £70m deal amid yet another midfield crisis, days after that 4-0 humiliation at Brentford. Now United are back in Madrid’s orbit, trying to fix the same position again, potentially by signing the man bought to succeed Casemiro in Spain.

Mixed memories from Madrid

United’s record with Real Madrid imports is complicated. Casemiro delivered in bursts, impressing in his first and final seasons at Old Trafford, but he also anchored midfields in two of the club’s worst sides in 34 and 51 years before being released last month.

Raphael Varane arrived at 28 in 2021 with four Champions League titles and a World Cup behind him. Injuries stalked his time in Manchester, though he still started in League Cup and FA Cup final wins before also being released.

Go back further and the warning signs flash even brighter. Angel Di Maria, a British record £59.7m signing in 2014, lasted less than a year before departing and was loudly booed on his return to Old Trafford with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.

This is the history United must weigh as they consider another major outlay on a Madrid player. Yet Tchouameni is a different profile: younger than Casemiro and Varane were on arrival, already adapted to a high-intensity defensive role, and with the athletic range United’s midfield has lacked.

Crowded house at the Bernabeu

Madrid’s own midfield picture adds another layer. Bernardo Silva has arrived and, after spending much of last season in a deeper role at Manchester City, offers Mourinho a technically gifted option from the base of midfield. Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde remain central to Madrid’s plans, with contracts that run a year beyond Tchouameni’s.

With that depth, Madrid can afford to listen. A sizeable bid for Tchouameni would not just bring in cash; it would clear a pathway for Rodri if they press ahead with that pursuit.

For United, the equation is blunt. They have rebuilt, reshuffled and rebranded their midfield repeatedly. They have added energy, creativity and youth. What they still lack is a specialist shield in front of the back four.

Tchouameni ticks every sporting box. The question now is whether United are finally prepared to pay the price they once balked at – and whether Madrid, already eyeing their next great holding midfielder, are about to hand them the answer to a problem that has defined a decade.
