PSG in Talks for Yan Diomande: Liverpool's Plans Unravel

Paris Saint-Germain have moved to the front of the queue for Yan Diomande, opening formal talks over a deal that could reshape not only their own attack but Liverpool’s summer plans as well.

The French champions have begun discussions to understand the terms of a transfer from RB Leipzig, and crucially, Diomande’s camp have now informed Liverpool that PSG is his preferred destination if he leaves Germany in this window. That single message has flipped the dynamic of a chase Liverpool thought they were controlling.

Liverpool’s plan unravels

Liverpool have been on Diomande for months. Their recruitment team tracked his rise closely last season, positioned themselves early, and believed that if the 21-year-old chose the Premier League, Anfield would be the natural landing spot.

They knew the risks. Bayern Munich and PSG lurked in the background, ready to pounce if the deal dragged. So Liverpool tried to move fast, pushing to get a transfer done before the World Cup to avoid the inevitable multi-club auction once Europe’s heavyweights fully engaged.

It has not worked.

The Reds lodged a package worth around €100m (£86.3m / $114m) last week, a serious play for one of Europe’s most explosive young wingers. Leipzig did not blink. The Bundesliga side have held firm to a valuation closer to €130m (£112.2m / $148.2m) and, more importantly, to a stance that they would rather keep Diomande for at least one more season before tying him down to a new long-term deal.

That position has not shifted. What has changed is the landscape around it.

With PSG now in direct talks and Diomande’s camp making clear where his priority lies, Liverpool’s carefully laid strategy has run into the very scenario they were desperate to avoid.

PSG smell opportunity

Inside PSG, the mood is bullish. The club have been encouraged by Diomande’s preference and by the strong relationship between their transfer advisor Luis Campos and former Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, now Chairman of the Supervisory Board. Those links have only strengthened belief in Paris that a deal is there to be constructed, even with Leipzig digging in.

Luis Enrique is a firm admirer. He sees Diomande as one of the standout young attackers in Europe and is already considering how the Ivorian would fit into an evolving front line at the Parc des Princes.

This is not just about one signing, either. PSG are in the middle of a major attacking rebuild and Diomande is one pillar of a four-pronged push designed to refresh the squad and underline their status at the top of the European market.

The knock-on effects could be dramatic.

Barcola in the crosshairs

The clearest immediate casualty of Diomande’s arrival would likely be Bradley Barcola.

The France World Cup star ended last season frustrated, increasingly reduced to a role off the bench during PSG’s Champions League run-in. Those close to the situation indicate he has already made it clear he will look for a move if he cannot secure a guaranteed first-team role next season.

If Diomande walks through the door, that path to regular minutes narrows even further.

Interest in Barcola is already intense. Liverpool are among the clubs watching closely, having long identified the 23-year-old as a serious alternative to Diomande. Reports place his valuation around €90m (£77.6m / $102.6m), and there is a feeling at Anfield that this might be the moment to act.

New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola is understood to be a huge admirer of Barcola’s profile and versatility. If Diomande heads to Paris, the domino that could fall next is Barcola boarding a plane in the opposite direction.

Four statement signings in Paris

While Diomande dominates headlines, PSG’s summer build is broader and more calculated than a single marquee move.

Their pursuit of Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche is being treated as a completely separate track. Inside the club, Akliouche is viewed as the natural successor to Lee Kang-in, who is closing in on a switch to Atletico Madrid, rather than a direct rival to Diomande for minutes.

Goncalo Ramos’ club-record move to AC Milan has left another gap up front. To address that, Bournemouth striker Eli Junior Kroupi has emerged as one of the leading options under consideration. Work is already underway behind the scenes as PSG weigh up how best to reinforce Luis Enrique’s forward line.

And they are planning beyond this season. Sources indicate PSG also believe they are well placed in the race for Lille wonderkid Ayyoub Bouaddi. Lille are open to a sale on one condition: any agreement must include a loan back for the coming campaign. That suits PSG’s long-term planning, allowing them to secure a premium talent without crowding their current midfield.

Whether Bouaddi arrives this summer will hinge on outgoings. Fabian Ruiz continues to draw interest from across Europe, yet Enrique would ideally keep the Spain international for at least one more season, valuing his experience in what is increasingly a youthful squad.

Liverpool left on the outside

For Liverpool, the picture is far less comfortable.

They have invested time, data, and energy into Diomande, positioning him as a key part of their next attacking cycle. They remain convinced by his ceiling. But preference matters in modern transfers, and right now that preference points firmly to Paris.

With PSG now at the table, Diomande’s camp aligned with a move to the Parc des Princes, and Leipzig still demanding top dollar while insisting they are happy to keep him, Liverpool’s room for manoeuvre is shrinking fast.

A few weeks ago, this felt like a deal within their grasp. Today, it looks more like the trigger for a different kind of move: Diomande to PSG, and the door swinging wide open for Barcola to test the noise of You’ll Never Walk Alone.
