Newcastle United Nears €60m Transfer for Johan Manzambi
Newcastle United are on the brink of one of the standout deals of the summer, having reached an agreement with Freiburg for 20-year-old midfielder Johan Manzambi in a transfer worth €60m, according to Sky Germany.
All major points between the clubs are understood to be settled. Newcastle are now working through the final details with Manzambi himself, who is expected to sign a long-term contract and become a central pillar of their evolving project.
The fee reflects the scale of his rise. Manzambi has been one of the breakout names of the year, driving Freiburg’s Bundesliga campaign and carrying that form straight into the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His numbers tell part of the story: five goals and four assists in 27 league appearances last season, followed by three goals and two assists at this summer’s tournament.
That output, from midfield and at just 20, inevitably drew a crowd.
Aston Villa were among the clubs to move into position, especially after Amadou Onana suffered an ACL injury during the World Cup. Villa’s need for a powerful, progressive midfielder was immediate and obvious, and Manzambi fit the profile. The race, though, has tilted decisively towards Tyneside, with Newcastle now clear favourites to land the Swiss international.
For the moment, Manzambi can only watch events unfold. Despite his impact at the World Cup, he is currently sidelined for Switzerland, who have marched into the quarter-finals after a penalty shootout victory over Colombia. They now face Argentina, a heavyweight tie that will play out without one of their brightest young talents on the pitch.
Even from the treatment room, his influence lingers. Three goals, two assists, and a level of composure rarely seen in a 20-year-old have marked him out as one of the tournament’s most valuable midfielders. Clubs have taken note. Newcastle appear ready to pay the premium.
If the final details fall into place as expected, the Premier League will gain another high-end, ball-carrying midfielder with an eye for goal and a knack for big moments. Freiburg will lose their jewel. Newcastle, increasingly ambitious in the market, will add another statement signing.
The only question now is how quickly Manzambi can swap the uncertainty of a World Cup injury lay-off for the roar of St James’ Park and the demands of English football.
