Now the next seismic name is being whispered: Mohamed Salah.

The former Liverpool winger has walked away from Anfield this summer with a year still left on his contract, closing the door on one of the Premier League’s defining eras. He has just led Egypt at the 2026 World Cup and, at 34, stands at a crossroads familiar to many of Europe’s greats: one last major contract, one last big stage.

Turkey has been floated as a destination. That would be a familiar route, a strong league with European nights and passionate crowds. But a different rumour has started to catch fire — that Salah is in talks with an unnamed MLS club.

Messi’s arrival showed MLS how much one superstar can bend the narrative of an entire competition. If Salah follows, with his scoring record, his global profile, and his status as one of Africa’s greatest players, the league’s transformation from retirement stop to global stage would move another step forward.
