Manchester United Target Tielemans as Éderson Deal Faces Delays
Manchester United are turning to proven pedigree. With their pursuit of Atalanta’s Éderson stuck in the mud, the club have accelerated a move for Youri Tielemans, entering advanced talks with Aston Villa over a deal for the Belgium midfielder.
Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, is leading negotiations and is working on a financial package that would prise Tielemans from Villa Park. The 29-year-old is believed to have a £35m release clause in a contract that still has two years to run, a figure United are weighing up as they reshape the heart of Michael Carrick’s team.
This is not a speculative punt. Tielemans arrives with deep Premier League roots and a heavy international résumé. He first landed in England with Leicester in 2019 after leaving Monaco, quickly establishing himself as one of the division’s most technically assured midfielders, before moving to Villa on a free transfer four years later.
For Belgium, his status is even clearer. Ninety caps. World Cup captain. The leader of a side that pushed Spain all the way before falling 2-1 in the quarter-finals on Friday. United are not buying potential; they are buying a finished article.
Carrick needs exactly that. Casemiro’s departure at the end of last season has ripped out a key piece of United’s midfield structure, and Manuel Ugarte is viewed inside the club as a rotation option rather than an automatic starter. The rebuild has already begun: a £48m deal, rising by £2m in add-ons, has been agreed with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, earmarked as a long-term pillar in the centre of the pitch.
Éderson was supposed to follow. United had lined up the 27-year-old Brazilian as Carrick’s second major midfield signing of the summer window, only for complications around the proposed transfer to throw the move into serious doubt. With that path blocked, United have pushed Tielemans to the front of the queue.
The move carries a clear message. United are prepared to step away from their usual resale-conscious model when the right profile becomes available. At 29, Tielemans will offer little or no sell-on value, but his experience, temperament and tactical intelligence fit the immediate demands of a squad trying to reassert itself at the top end of the Premier League.
For Aston Villa, his exit would sting. Tielemans has been a central figure in Unai Emery’s evolving side, and his departure would come at a particularly awkward moment. His compatriot Amadou Onana has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament at the World Cup, leaving Villa suddenly exposed in an area of the pitch that had looked well stocked.
United, sensing that vulnerability and driven by their own urgency, are moving quickly. If Wilcox can trigger the clause and tie up personal terms, Carrick will get the seasoned conductor he wants at the base of his midfield — and Villa will be left to patch up a hole in theirs just as the new season looms.
