Manchester United Target World Cup Star Felix Nmecha as Casemiro Successor

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is accelerating, and the next name on their list comes with a familiar Manchester backstory and a World Cup spotlight.

Felix Nmecha, once of Manchester City and now a driving force in Borussia Dortmund’s engine room, has emerged as a serious option for United as they look to phase out Casemiro and reshape the core of their side.

From City prospect to World Cup headline

Nmecha’s rise has been a slow burn rather than a sudden explosion. The 25-year-old came through City’s academy, highly regarded but never fully trusted to anchor their midfield in the long term. In 2021 he left for Wolfsburg after a strong loan spell at Anderlecht, betting on minutes instead of reputation.

That decision is paying off on the biggest stage.

At the World Cup, the Germany midfielder has turned heads with a blend of physical presence, energy and composure. He underlined that form in ruthless style against Curacao, opening the scoring in a 7-1 win with a stunning first-time, right-footed strike from around 20 yards, whipped into the top corner.

The goal was the highlight. The performance was the message. Nmecha covered ground relentlessly, broke up counterattacks and drove his side forward from box to box – exactly the profile United’s recruitment team have been scouring the market for.

United step up the search for Casemiro’s heir

United’s need is clear. Casemiro, once the immovable anchor of their midfield, is moving towards the exit and the club want a modern, mobile replacement who can both protect the back line and contribute in possession.

Reports in Germany now place United firmly in the race for Nmecha, who was first linked with a move to Old Trafford back in February. This is no left-field punt; it is a continuation of long-term scouting on a player whose game has matured in the Bundesliga and now at international level.

The twist? Their interest brings him back to the city where his professional story began – but potentially in the red half this time.

A crowded field – and familiar rivals

United are not alone. Sky Sports Deutschland report that a cluster of elite clubs are circling, including Manchester City, who have been credited with an interest in bringing their former academy product back to the Etihad.

Across the continent, Real Madrid are also understood to be in the frame, with returning manager Jose Mourinho reportedly keen on the midfielder. For a player once fighting for minutes on loan, this is rarefied air: three European giants, one emerging all-rounder.

The competition only strengthens Dortmund’s hand.

Dortmund hold the cards – for now

Borussia Dortmund are under no pressure to cash in. Nmecha is under contract until 2030, a position of security that allows the Bundesliga side to dictate terms and timing.

There is a release clause written into that long-term deal, but it does not offer any immediate relief to his suitors. The clause, set at £61m, only becomes active in the summer of 2027. Dortmund’s hierarchy are understood to be relaxed about the situation and are planning around Nmecha staying put in the short term, with any exit more likely in that release-clause window than this summer.

That stance is echoed by the player’s camp.

Speaking to Bild, his agent Tobi Alabi made it clear they are not agitating for a move.

“Felix still has two years left on his contract, and we fully respect that. Borussia Dortmund have played an important role in his development. He is grateful for the trust and the platform the club have given him. The player is developing from season to season, and when a player performs well, there is naturally always interest and questions about his future. That’s part of top-level football and reflects the progress he has made. Right now, the focus is very clear: Felix is determined to give everything for Borussia Dortmund, to fight for the club and to help the team achieve its goals.”

The message is diplomatic but firm: admiration is welcome, negotiations can wait.

United’s midfield puzzle

While Nmecha’s future remains anchored in Dortmund for the time being, United’s broader midfield overhaul is already in motion.

The club are on the verge of confirming the signing of Brazil international Ederson from Atalanta in a £39m deal. The all-action midfielder is expected to undergo his medical while away with the national team at the World Cup, another sign of how aggressively United are moving to reshape their core.

Ederson would add bite and vertical running. Nmecha, if United eventually prise him away from Dortmund, would bring a different balance: a rangy, tactically disciplined presence with the athleticism to patrol large spaces and the technique to influence attacks.

For now, United watch and wait as Nmecha continues to shine on the world stage. The question is not whether Europe’s heavyweights will come calling in earnest, but when Dortmund finally hear an offer they cannot ignore – and whether Old Trafford, not the Etihad or the Bernabeu, becomes the next stop on a career that is rapidly gathering pace.
