Manchester United Targets Youri Tielemans for Midfield Overhaul
Manchester United are closing in on Youri Tielemans after stepping up plans for a major reshaping of their midfield this summer, with the club ready to trigger a £35 million release clause in the Aston Villa playmaker’s contract, sources have told ESPN.
The Belgian, now 29 and at the peak of his career, has signalled his willingness to swap Villa Park for Old Trafford despite Villa’s desire to keep him. He has spent three years in the Midlands, evolving into one of Unai Emery’s most reliable operators and playing a central role in the club’s Europa League triumph last season.
That European run hardened his reputation. Tielemans dictated tempo, pressed aggressively, and delivered in big moments. His stock rose further at the World Cup, where he scored twice in Belgium’s dramatic 3-2 win over Senegal in the round of 32, underlining his knack for arriving in the right place at the right time.
United, searching for experience and control in the middle of the pitch, see him as a ready-made solution rather than a project. The release clause gives them a clear route to a deal. If completed, Tielemans would walk into a squad being aggressively retooled.
Andrey Santos already forms part of that plan. United have agreed a £50m fee with Chelsea for the Brazilian midfielder, with only formalities left before the move is announced. Santos, younger and more explosive, offers a different profile to Tielemans, hinting at a rebuilt engine room designed to blend craft, legs and versatility.
The reshaping is not limited to midfield. At the back, United are close to bringing in Karl Darlow from Leeds United to push current No. 1 Senne Lammens. Darlow’s arrival would add seasoned competition in goal and sharpen standards in a key position ahead of a demanding season on multiple fronts.
Not every target is moving closer, though. United had agreed a £35m fee with Atalanta for Brazil international Éderson before the World Cup, but that deal has stalled. Club sources have not disclosed the precise reason and have stopped short of calling it off entirely, leaving the door open to revisit talks later in the window.
For now, the focus is clear: close out Tielemans, finalise Santos, and lock in Darlow. If those moves land, United’s midfield – and the spine of their squad – will look very different by the time the new season kicks off.
