Liverpool's Pursuit of Yan Diomande Amid Klopp's Resistance
Jurgen Klopp has barely stepped away from the Anfield dugout, yet he is already standing between Liverpool and one of their marquee summer targets.
The former Liverpool manager, now head of global soccer for the Red Bull group, is playing a key role in RB Leipzig’s hardline stance over highly-rated winger Yan Diomande – a player Liverpool have pushed close to the top of their attacking shortlist as they prepare for life after Mohamed Salah.
Klopp on the other side of the table
Liverpool’s summer is shaping up to be one of transition and restraint. The emotional farewells for Salah and Andy Robertson are coming, but behind the scenes there has been a clear decision: no more senior pillars will be allowed to walk out. Alisson is now expected to stay for at least another season, a significant win for stability in goal.
Out wide, though, the picture is far less settled. Cody Gakpo’s inconsistency and Salah’s impending departure leave a glaring vacancy in the front line. Diomande, the RB Leipzig winger who has lit up the Bundesliga and drawn admiring glances across Europe, has quickly become one of the most discussed names at Anfield.
Liverpool are not alone. Paris Saint-Germain are circling as well. The teenager’s stock has never been higher.
Yet, just as Liverpool move to act, a familiar figure is shaping the resistance.
Klopp, overseeing transfers across the Red Bull network, is heavily involved in strategy at Leipzig. According to reports, the German’s influence aligns with a firm decision from the Bundesliga club: Diomande will not be leaving this summer.
Leipzig, who have secured Champions League football again, are described as “adamant” the winger is “going nowhere,” despite Liverpool placing him near the top of their wish list. The club’s hierarchy are prepared to bat away even substantial offers, confident their position is strong and their project compelling.
The knock-on effect stretches beyond Merseyside. PSG’s pursuit is complicated, and so is the wider winger market, with the situation potentially impacting targets such as Bradley Barcola, admired by Arsenal.
A €100m talent at a crossroads
The story is not entirely closed, though. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has underlined that Diomande is still weighing up his future, with both Liverpool and PSG actively “pushing” for him.
Diomande is in dialogue with his agents and the interested clubs, examining every angle: the sporting project, the manager, the contract, his development path. For a player of his age and profile, the next step will define his career.
Leipzig, aware of his value, have put a clear proposal on the table. Stay one more season. Sign a new deal. Earn an improved salary and insert a release clause that would frame his eventual exit on their terms. It is a tempting package for both security and control.
At the same time, they have made their price for an immediate departure abundantly clear. Any club wanting Diomande now will need to start the conversation around €100m, and possibly more, depending on the nature of the bids that land in Germany.
That figure alone underlines how highly Leipzig rate him – and how steep the climb will be for Liverpool if they decide he is the winger to build around in the post-Salah era.
So the situation stands on a knife edge. Liverpool want him. PSG want him. Leipzig, with Klopp now in a very different role, will dictate the terms.
The question is simple: will Liverpool push hard enough to break through the wall their old manager is helping to hold up, or will they be forced to redraw their attacking blueprint for the summer window?
