Iran Cleared for US Entry Ahead of World Cup
Iran’s national team finally has the green light to enter the United States, ending weeks of uncertainty just days before the World Cup kicks off.
US officials confirmed that visas have been issued for the full delegation — players and essential backroom staff — allowing Iran to take its place at the tournament. The decision lands only 10 days before Iran’s opening match against New Zealand in Los Angeles on 15 June, cutting it fine for a team trying to finalise preparations on and off the pitch.
“The visas necessary for Iran to compete in the World Cup, including for athletes and necessary support staff, have been issued,” US officials said, drawing a clear line between sporting access and national security.
They stressed that the process would not become a back door for any wider agenda, stating that the US would not allow the Iranian team to “abuse this system to sneak terrorists into the United States under false pretenses”.
So Iran can travel. But it will do so under a sharper political spotlight than most.
The Iranian football federation has yet to respond publicly to the visa approval, keeping its counsel while logistics, travel plans and final training details are hurried into place. For the players, the focus now turns to the football itself and a looming date in Los Angeles, where a long, tense build-up has finally given way to certainty: Iran will be there when the World Cup begins.
