Ibrahima Konate Joins Real Madrid: A Major Transfer Leap
Ibrahima Konate is about to swap Anfield for the Bernabeu – and the numbers behind the move underline just how big a leap he is taking.
The French defender, whose Liverpool contract expires on June 30, is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer after failing to agree fresh terms on Merseyside despite lengthy negotiations. Liverpool confirmed his departure last weekend in the same breath as announcing the dismissal of Arne Slot, drawing a sharp line under a brief, turbulent era.
Konate then broke his silence, admitting he was “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game.” It was a message that sounded like closure. The next chapter, it turns out, is lined in Madrid white.
Galactico money for a free transfer
Once Fabrizio Romano revealed that Konate had verbally agreed to join Real, the broad outline of the deal became clear: a four-year contract, dependent on Florentino Perez seeing off Enrique Riquelme in the upcoming presidential election.
Now, figures from Spanish outlet El Desmarque paint the full picture. Konate’s contract, running to 2030, is reported to be worth €24 million gross per season – around €460,000 a week, or roughly £400,000 before tax.
Over four years, that takes the total package to a reported £83 million, assuming he sees out the deal. On top of that, the 25-year-old is in line for a signing-on bonus of around £17 million, a hefty reward made possible by the absence of a transfer fee.
It is a dramatic jump from his Liverpool wage, where he was said to be on around £150,000 a week. Konate is also understood to have rejected a huge proposal from Saudi Arabia to make the move to Madrid, prioritising the chance to anchor Real’s back line over a purely financial play in the Gulf.
For a player arriving on a free, Real are paying Galactico money. They clearly see him as exactly that.
Liverpool left scrambling
Back at Anfield, the timing could hardly be more awkward.
Liverpool, having just turned to Andoni Iraola as Slot’s replacement, are facing a defensive rebuild at the same time as an attacking one. Konate is leaving, Andy Robertson has gone, and Mo Salah has departed as well. Three pillars, gone in one summer.
The club now needs reinforcements across the pitch, but the centre of defence has suddenly become a priority area. The early response has raised eyebrows.
TEAMtalk report that Liverpool have identified Burnley defender Maxime Esteve as a potential replacement for Konate. On the face of it, it is a left-field link: Esteve only arrived at Turf Moor last summer from Montpellier for £10.3 million and endured relegation in his first Premier League season.
Relegation, though, did not erase his impact. The French centre-back impressed enough to attract interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Crystal Palace, with his composure and profile catching the eye despite Burnley’s struggles.
Burnley, for their part, are understood to be resigned to losing him in this window and are already lining up their own succession plan. Middlesbrough captain Dael Fry has been earmarked as the man to step into the heart of their defence once Esteve moves on.
So Liverpool’s search for a Konate replacement may run through a relegated side and into the Championship. Real Madrid, meanwhile, are preparing to unveil a free-transfer signing on superstar wages.
One club cashes in on a contract stand-off. The other has to get the next decision absolutely right.
