FIFA Allows Sealed Water Bottles at World Cup 2026

Fifa has rowed back on its controversial World Cup bottle ban, confirming fans will be allowed to bring sealed disposable water bottles into stadiums after a backlash over the original policy.

The governing body had sparked anger with a late change that outlawed all bottles – along with cups, jars and cans – on safety grounds. The move was widely criticised as heavy-handed and out of step with modern matchday expectations, especially for a tournament likely to be played in demanding conditions.

Under the revised guidance, Fifa has drawn a clear line between what can and cannot come through the turnstiles.

World Cup 2026 chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi confirmed that each supporter will be permitted to bring one soft, plastic, factory-sealed water bottle of up to 20 ounces (560ml) into the ground. That gives fans at least one guaranteed source of water without relying solely on stadium vendors.

The clampdown now focuses specifically on hard-sided, resealable containers. Those remain banned, with Fifa insisting such bottles could pose a safety and security risk if thrown or used as projectiles.

So the message is simple: bring a sealed plastic disposable bottle, and you’re in. Turn up with your favourite solid reusable flask, and it stays at the gate.
