Fenerbahce's €50m Bid for Rafa Leao: A Game-Changer

Fenerbahce have put a stunning offer on the table for Rafael Leao, testing both AC Milan’s resolve and the winger’s long‑term future in Serie A.

According to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, the Istanbul club are ready to hand the Portuguese forward a net salary of €8 million per season on a five‑year contract. It is the kind of proposal that forces a player to stop, think, and weigh up everything he knows.

And that is before the bonuses kick in.

Leao would be in line for three significant add‑ons each year: €1.5m if he makes more than 20 appearances, another €1.5m if he hits 15 goals, and €1m more if Fenerbahce finally get their hands on the Süper Lig title.

For a club that has not been champions since 2014, that last clause carries weight.

A statement of intent from Aziz Yildirim’s Fenerbahce

Fenerbahce have finished runners‑up in each of the last four seasons, watching Galatasaray set the pace and lift the trophy. The frustration has built year on year. Under newly elected president Aziz Yildirim, the response is clear: spend, and spend big.

The report states Fenerbahce are prepared to pay €50m to Milan for Leao. That figure would smash their own transfer record, set only weeks ago.

Mason Greenwood arrived from Olympique Marseille for €39m, becoming the most expensive signing in the club’s history. That landmark may not last long. Fenerbahce have already backed that move up with Vedat Muriqi from Mallorca for €15.5m and Nathan Ake from Manchester City for €8m, underlining a recruitment drive aimed at closing the gap to Galatasaray immediately, not gradually.

Leao would be the headline act in that project.

A polarising talent at a crossroads

At Milan, Rafa Leao has long divided opinion. His talent is obvious, his bursts of brilliance undeniable, but so too is the inconsistency that has followed him through his time in Italy.

Last season he scored 10 goals and added three assists in 31 competitive appearances for the Rossoneri. Respectable numbers, yet not always enough to silence critics who expect a player of his gifts to dominate every week.

A move to the Süper Lig would give him a fresh stage and a fresh narrative. The pressure would remain high, the money elite, but the environment different. In Istanbul, he would walk into a squad being aggressively built to win now, with the expectation that he becomes the difference in a title race Fenerbahce are desperate to finally win.

Milan’s counter‑plan: Karetsas, but with a twist

Gazzetta dello Sport also reports that if Milan choose to cash in on Leao, they already have a preferred reinvestment target: Konstantinos Karetsas of KRC Genk.

The Greece international is viewed as a key attacking prospect, someone who could be moulded into a long‑term piece of Milan’s frontline. There is a snag. Karetsas has reportedly already given his word to Borussia Dortmund, and unlike BVB, Milan have not yet submitted a formal offer.

So Milan face a delicate equation. Accept a huge bid for a player who can dazzle but frustrate, then try to hijack a deal for a younger attacker who appears to be leaning towards the Bundesliga. Or hold their ground, keep Leao, and back themselves to extract more consistency from a forward who still feels one big season away from justifying every superlative.

Fenerbahce have made their move. The money is real, the ambition obvious. Now the decision, and the risk, sit firmly in Milan’s hands – and in Leao’s.
