England Boosted by Player Returns Ahead of Norway Quarter-Final

England’s preparations for their World Cup quarter-final with Norway received a timely jolt of optimism in the Miami sun, as both Marc Guehi and Declan Rice came through training with the squad.

Guehi, a doubt after reports of a hamstring problem, moved freely at Inter Miami’s training base, easing fears that Thomas Tuchel would be forced into reshaping his defence on the eve of the last-eight tie. Rice, laid low by a stomach bug in the aftermath of last weekend’s win over Mexico, also rejoined the group, a significant boost at the heart of midfield.

The sight of both players back in full work cut through the oppressive Florida heat. England trained in 33-degree conditions that felt fiercer still in the humidity, a stark contrast to the indoor arenas and rain-swept pitches that have framed their tournament so far. This, though, is exactly what they came back for: a return to their pre-tournament base and the climate they had deliberately chosen to harden themselves against.

Tuchel’s mood improved further with Reece James stepping up his own recovery. The right-back, also coming back from a hamstring injury, took part in the session and now looks on course to be available, restoring a key outlet on England’s flank at just the right moment in the competition.

Only Jordan Henderson sat it out. The midfielder has begun his recovery from wrist surgery after an awkward fall during the wild celebrations that followed the famous victory at the Estadio Azteca. He remains in Miami in a supporting role, close enough to the action to feel part of it, but far enough removed to know his influence will be from the sidelines rather than the centre circle.

As the sun dropped and the session wound down, England’s picture looked clearer. The injuries that threatened to cloud their quarter-final have eased. The heat is unforgiving, the stakes even more so. Now it is a question of whether this refreshed group can carry that hard-earned resilience from the training pitch into a place in the semi-finals.
