Chiefs Lose Late Lead in Pre-Season Match

Behind closed doors, with no crowd noise and little fanfare, Kaizer Chiefs’ latest pre-season outing still managed to produce a familiar sting: a lead lost in the dying minutes.

Etiosa Ighodaro, one of the key attacking hopes for the new campaign, put Amakhosi in front in the 77th minute. The striker found the breakthrough to cap a patient performance from a starting XI packed with established names and a few fresh combinations. In a low-key setting, it looked like the ideal pre-season script: fitness, structure, and a narrow win.

Then the 89th minute arrived.

Findlay Curtis stepped up and punished Chiefs with a dipping effort that caught new signing Renaldo Leaner out, the ball dropping cruelly into the far corner. One moment of quality, one moment of hesitation, and the advantage was gone. For Leaner, it was a harsh introduction in Chiefs colours; for the team, an early reminder that concentration cannot switch off, even in July.

New Faces, Mixed Lessons

Arthur Zwane’s side — led on the day by captain Brandon Petersen — started with a solid core:

  • Petersen (Captain)
  • Monyane
  • Mako
  • Miguel
  • Msimango
  • Ndlovu
  • Maboe
  • Baartman
  • Vilakazi
  • Chislett
  • Silva

That group set the platform before the bench began to roll. The second half turned into a showcase of depth and experimentation as Renaldo Leaner, Pule Mmodi, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Zitha Kwinika, Asanele Velebayi, Reeve Frosler and Kabelo Nkgwesa all got minutes.

For the coaching staff, the late equaliser will irritate, but the broader picture matters more: match rhythm, combinations tested, and new signings pushed into real-game situations rather than training drills.

Tougher Tests on the Horizon

The schedule now sharpens. On 15 July, Chiefs meet Al Kholood, who finished 14th in the Saudi Pro League last season. It’s the kind of opponent that will stress-test defensive organisation and game management — exactly the areas exposed by Curtis’ late strike.

Three days later, Elche CF await on 18 July. The Spanish side survived in LaLiga by a single point last season, finishing 15th and living on the edge until the final stretch. They will bring a different tempo, a different style, and a different kind of pressure.

A late pre-season lapse in an empty venue may not define a season. But if Chiefs are serious about turning narrow frustrations into hard-nosed wins when the real stakes arrive, this kind of moment cannot become a habit.
