Breel Embolo Joins Switzerland's World Cup Squad After Visa Approval
Breel Embolo will finally link up with Switzerland’s World Cup squad in the United States after receiving the visa clearance that had kept him grounded at home and cast an awkward shadow over the team’s preparations.
The Swiss football federation confirmed on Thursday that the 29-year-old striker is expected to land in San Diego on Friday evening, several days after his team-mates flew out to their pre-tournament base in California.
From boarding gate to waiting game
Embolo had been due to travel with the rest of the squad on Tuesday. Bags packed, plans set, World Cup on the horizon. Then his ESTA travel authorisation was suddenly placed under further review shortly before departure.
While Murat Yakin’s players crossed the Atlantic and settled into camp, one of their key attacking options stayed behind in Switzerland, locked in a bureaucratic holding pattern and waiting for a decision that would determine his World Cup involvement.
The uncertainty dragged on for days. Only on Thursday did the picture clear.
“We have just been informed that Breel Embolo's visa has been approved. He will therefore be able to travel to the United States. He is expected to join the team on Friday evening,” the federation said in a statement, drawing a line under the saga.
Legal past, fresh scrutiny
The delay did not come from footballing matters but from American entry checks.
U.S. authorities requested additional information and summoned Embolo to an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Bern on Wednesday, where officials reviewed documents tied to a legal case stemming from a 2018 altercation in Basel.
They also asked for court records linked to a 2023 conviction for making multiple threats, a case that led to a suspended fine and became legally binding earlier this year. Although that matter had already been resolved through the Swiss legal system, it triggered extra scrutiny under U.S. immigration rules.
Only after those checks were completed did the green light arrive.
Relief for Switzerland
For Switzerland, the approval restores a sense of normality. A World Cup build-up that briefly revolved around paperwork and past court records can now refocus on tactics, line-ups and the form of a forward they regard as a central piece of their attacking plan.
Embolo, delayed but cleared, will walk into camp in San Diego on Friday evening with the administrative storm finally behind him and a World Cup in front of him.
