Arsenal Secures Leicester Prodigy Jeremy Monga Amid United's Struggles
Arsenal have landed one of the most coveted teenagers in English football, with Leicester City wonderkid Jeremy Monga reportedly rejecting Manchester United to join the Gunners.
The 16-year-old, regarded as one of the brightest young English prospects, had drawn serious interest from United, Manchester City and Chelsea. Arsenal, though, are understood to have convinced him their pathway is the right one, and are tipped to pay between £10m and £15m for his signature.
For United, it is another reminder that they are no longer the automatic destination for the country’s elite youngsters. While Arsenal continue to sell a clear route from academy to first team, United find themselves fighting on multiple fronts in a transfer market that looks increasingly chaotic around Old Trafford.
Butt, Neville, Saha: Legends Call for a Smarter United Rebuild
Inside that chaos, former United figures are trying to sketch out a plan.
Nicky Butt has gone public with his plea: build a squad, not a billboard. The former midfielder wants United to move for West Ham United’s Crysencio Summerville, a player he admires but does not sugar-coat.
“He's an explosive player, he's good to watch, but I don't think he's consistent enough,” Butt said, speaking via the Mirror and Paddy Power. That sounds like a warning. Then comes the push. The fee, he argues, “shouldn't be a lot,” and United “have to build a squad.”
For Butt, this is about depth. He pointed to last season’s defeat to Leeds at Old Trafford as a brutal example. When injuries hit, the bench was bare. The starting XI could compete; the rest could not. United, he insists, need players like Summerville to raise the level of the supporting cast, not just the headline acts.
Gary Neville, meanwhile, has been casting his eye over the World Cup and sees another opportunity in Borussia Dortmund and Germany midfielder Felix Nmecha. With the “West Ham boy” Fernandes reportedly carrying a £100m price tag, Neville believes United must shop smarter.
“The more he [Nmecha] plays like he did the other night the more expensive he'll get,” Neville said. But right now, he looks like value: a midfielder who “looked outstanding” and “had absolutely everything” in his recent display. It is a clear nudge towards a more forensic, less reactive recruitment strategy.
Diomande Tug-of-War: Saha Urges United to Crash Liverpool’s Party
On the flanks, another battle is brewing.
Yan Diomande, the RB Leipzig winger shining for Ivory Coast at the World Cup, has become one of the most in-demand young attackers in Europe. Liverpool and PSG want him. Leipzig want him to sign a new contract. Liverpool are prepared to commit to a package worth up to £86m.
Louis Saha wants Manchester United to smash the door down.
“Man United should definitely hijack Liverpool’s interest in Yan Diomande,” he told Metro and Casinolyze.co.uk. For Saha, this is the modern winger: confident, direct, physical, courageous. The kind of wide player, he argues, who “now dominates football.”
He loves the story too. Diomande’s rise from a difficult start in the US to stardom in Europe resonates with the former striker, who believes the 19-year-old “can be a superstar like Lamine Yamal.” It is a bold comparison, but it underlines the scale of talent United risk watching walk to Anfield.
Ederson Says It’s “Practically Done” as United Close on Atalanta Star
One deal is far closer to the finish line.
Brazilian midfielder Ederson all but confirmed his move to Manchester United, speaking after he was left out of his country’s 3-0 win over Haiti. The Atalanta man told Tuttosport his transfer to Old Trafford was “practically done.”
The only things missing now are the official announcement and the familiar photograph with the shirt. Ederson is expected to arrive in a £38.8m deal, a significant investment in a midfield that has needed fresh legs and fresh ideas.
For once, United appear to have moved decisively.
Inter Miami, Beckham and the MLS ‘Discovery’ Twist for Casemiro
While United work on incomings, one former Old Trafford star is preparing to welcome a familiar face.
David Beckham looks set to sign Casemiro for Inter Miami as a free agent. On the surface, it sounds straightforward: a big name, out of contract, heading to MLS. The reality is more complicated.
Because of the league’s “discovery clause,” Inter Miami are still expected to pay as much as £750,000 to LA Galaxy. Casemiro had reportedly held talks with Galaxy, who are classed as the club that “discovered” him in MLS terms, despite his long career with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Porto.
So Beckham may secure Casemiro on a free – but not without wiring close to £1m to a rival MLS side for the privilege.
Young Targets, Expiring Deals and a Market Full of Angles
Back in Europe, United’s scouting net continues to stretch.
In Belgium, 17-year-old Anderlecht talent Nathan De Cat is attracting attention from both United and Tottenham. The teenager has only a year left on his contract, a detail that has intensified interest. When he enters the final 12 months at the end of the month, any suitor – including Michael Carrick’s United – will see leverage in that ticking clock.
At the other end of the age and contract spectrum, two seasoned midfielders are about to hit the market for nothing. Leon Goretzka is expected to leave Bayern Munich as a free agent after the World Cup, while Franck Kessie is set to depart Al-Ahli on the same basis.
Both are still in their prime years: Goretzka at 31, Kessie at 29. United have been linked with both in previous windows when the fees would have been hefty. Now, the question is different. Would their experience and physicality be the right fit for a squad that has veered between too raw and too brittle?
Tonali, Fernandes and a Midfield Arms Race
The midfield arms race does not stop there.
Newcastle United have already turned down an offer of around £80m from Tottenham for Sandro Tonali, who only arrived on Tyneside in the summer of 2023. United have been linked with the Italy international, but Newcastle’s stance is clear: they are open to selling only for the “right” price, believed to be £100m.
Just as that story rumbled on, another twist emerged late on Saturday night. Spurs were reported by journalist Matteo Moretto to be “very close” to agreeing personal terms with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, the 21-year-old midfielder who has also been heavily pursued by United.
Fernandes is said to be interested in a move to north London, but talks between Tottenham and West Ham have not yet begun. That leaves a gap – and United are trying to drive through it. Fabrizio Romano reports that United are still pushing hard in negotiations with both the player’s camp and the Hammers, with the battle for his signature already intense.
Liverpool circling Diomande. Spurs pushing for Tonali and Fernandes. Arsenal stealing in for Monga.
United are in the thick of all of it. The question is whether they emerge from this window with a coherent squad – or just another collection of names.
