Ancelotti Faces Neymar Dilemma Ahead of World Cup Squad Announcement
Carlo Ancelotti knows exactly where the fault line runs in Brazil right now. It cuts straight through the No. 10 shirt.
On Monday, the coach will reveal his final 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup. Until then, one question dominates bars, TV studios and training grounds alike: is there room for Neymar?
Ancelotti faces the Neymar question head on
Speaking to Reuters on Tuesday, the Italian did not dodge the subject. He leaned into it.
"Neymar is very loved. Not only by the people, but also by the players. If you call up Neymar, you are not bringing a bomb into the locker room, because he is very dear, very loved," Ancelotti said, making it clear that dressing-room harmony will not be the issue.
He knows the noise around the decision. He hears the debate, the advice, the demands. He simply refuses to be consumed by it.
"I think it’s normal for everyone to give their opinion. I thank everyone who has given me advice," he added, before drawing a firm line: the choice will be his, and his alone.
Talent, fitness and a ticking clock
The Neymar dilemma is brutally simple: a player who has defined a generation for Brazil is racing against time to prove his body can still carry the weight of a World Cup.
"When you have to choose, you need to consider many things," Ancelotti said. "Neymar is an important player for this country, because of the talent he has always shown, and he had a problem, but he is recovering. He is working hard to recover and he is playing. In recent times he has improved a lot and is playing consistently."
That “problem” — his latest serious injury — pushed Neymar to the fringes of the national conversation. Now, improved physical condition in the last "15 or 20 days," as Ancelotti highlighted, has dragged him right back into the centre of it.
The coach’s words make one thing clear: Neymar is not being considered on reputation alone. His recent workload, sharpness and resilience are under the microscope, just like everyone else’s.
From 55 names to 26 decisions
The process is already in motion. On Monday of this week, the CBF sent FIFA a preliminary list of 55 players. Neymar’s name is there. He is officially “in the mix.”
From that long list, Ancelotti must carve out a final 26. He did not pretend the task is easy.
"Obviously, for me, it is not such a simple decision. I have to carefully assess the pros and cons," he admitted. "But that does not put extra pressure on me, because, as I said, for a year we have been evaluating not only Neymar, but all the players."
Then came the assertion of authority, the statement of ownership over this Brazil.
"I am the most suitable person to make this decision. Because the information I have about all Brazilian players this year, no one else has. So, I am the most suitable person. Can I make a perfect list? Impossible. But I can make a list with fewer mistakes compared to others. Of that, I am sure."
It was not arrogance. It was a reminder: this is his team, his work, his call.
No space for chaos
With Neymar, there is always talk of distractions, of circus, of sideshows. Ancelotti moved quickly to kill that narrative.
"The outside environment is under control, and it will remain under control until the end of the World Cup. With or without Neymar," he said.
No drama. No crisis. Not on his watch.
Countdown to Granja Comary and beyond
Once the final squad is revealed next Monday, the talking will give way to training. The selected players will gather at the CBF’s Granja Comary base in Teresópolis on May 27, the traditional cradle of Brazil’s World Cup campaigns.
There will be one concession to club football’s calendar. Players from PSG and Arsenal involved in the Champions League final will report later, joining a group that will already be shaping its identity under Ancelotti’s eye.
Brazil will then say farewell to their home fans at the Maracanã on May 31, in a friendly against Panama. That night will offer the first glimpse of how this new Seleção intends to play, and whether the No. 10 shirt belongs to Neymar or to a new heir.
From there, the squad crosses to the United States. On June 6, Brazil face Egypt in Cleveland in their final warm-up. One week later, on June 13 in New Jersey, the World Cup campaign begins against Morocco.
By then, the debate will be over and the list will be inked in history. Neymar will either walk out as part of another World Cup journey, or watch from afar as Brazil try to redraw their future without him.
