2026 World Cup: Current Third-Place Qualifiers and Round of 32 Match-Ups
The group stage of the 2026 World Cup is nearing its end. For the first time, the knockout phase expands to a round of 32 teams. Apart from group winners and runners-up, the eight best third-placed teams will also progress, which adds complexity to predicting upcoming matches.
With 48 teams competing, the tournament now features this new knockout round, where rankings for third-placed sides are determined by their group stage results and tiebreak criteria.
Ranking Criteria for Third-Place Teams
The order of third-placed teams depends mainly on points earned during group play. If tied, goal difference and goals scored decide the order, similar to Bundesliga rules. Next, fair play points come into play—fewer disciplinary points give an advantage. The system deducts one point per yellow card, three for a yellow-red combination, four for a straight red, and five if a player receives both yellow and red in one game. If teams remain tied, FIFA rankings help break the deadlock.
Round of 32: Possible Opponents and Scenarios
There are 495 potential combinations for which third-placed teams qualify and who they will face. FIFA uses a programmed system to prevent early rematches from the group stage and to map out the bracket dynamically. That leads to multiple possible opponents for each third-placed team.
Germany, for instance, might face third-placed teams from Groups A, B, C, D, or F. It seems more likely they'll meet the third-placed team from Group C or D rather than A, B, or F.
Germany's Most Probable Round of 32 Opponents
- Third-place from Group C or D: Higher probability
- Third-place from Group A, B, or F: Lower probability
Other match-ups depend on the exact teams finishing third in their groups, creating varied scenarios.
