2026 FIFA World Cup: Full Match Schedule, Team Fixtures, and Key Details
2026 FIFA World Cup Expands to 48 Teams Across North America
The 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup is set to be the largest in history, expanding to include 48 teams. For the first time, the tournament will be jointly hosted by three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While the U.S. and Mexico have previous World Cup hosting experience—1994 for the U.S., and 1970 and 1986 for Mexico—this will be Canada's debut as a host nation.
The group stage draw took place on December 5, 2025, unveiling the groups and pathways to the final for all qualified teams. Official match times and venues were revealed the following day.
New Tournament Format for 2026
The World Cup now features 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from every group automatically advance to the knockout rounds. Additionally, the eight best third-place teams will also move forward, creating a 32-team knockout bracket.
The knockout stage follows single-elimination rules. Third-place finishers face group winners but cannot meet opponents from their own group in the Round of 32. Teams reaching the semifinals will play eight matches total: three group games and five in the knockout rounds.
Group Stage Overview
Hosts were pre-assigned to specific groups: Mexico in Group A, Canada in Group B, and the United States in Group D. Top-ranked teams like Spain, Argentina, France, and England were placed on separate sides of the bracket to avoid early clashes.
Knockout Stage Details
The Round of 32 kicks off on June 28, 2026, with matches spread across venues in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. The knockout schedule continues through July, leading to the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Additional Information
FIFA has arranged stadium guides for all venues including Estadio Azteca, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, SoFi Stadium, and others across the three host nations. The schedule offers fans clear insights on match dates, kickoff times, and locations to follow their favorite teams.
Experts predict exciting encounters, especially as the format allows more teams a chance to advance. We think this expanded setup could lead to some surprising results, with more drama in the group and knockout stages than before.
